Boskednan stone circle
Date Added: 7th Jun 2013
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 1st Jun 1987. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 2

Boskednan stone circle submitted by JimChampion on 22nd Aug 2005. The portal stones illuminated by the last rays of the setting sun. The tallest one (on the left) has a diagonal groove present on this and the opposite side. The holes that the restored stones were raised from have been covered with pegged down foliage, presumably to encourage regrowth on the bare earth.

Chun Quoit submitted by sem on 16th Jun 2005. The capstone and the horizon.
There is a theory that dolmens (or quoits as they are known in Cornwall) were not totally covered in earth but the capstones were left uncovered and were a copy of the horizon. I have manipulated the tones in this shot to show this, but no shapes have been altered.

Merry Maidens (Circle) submitted by JimChampion on 27th Oct 2006. August 2005. The Merry Maidens under fluffy white clouds. I rediscovered this photo and selectively manipulated the contrast so that you can now see the stones (previously they were too dark). I've uploaded a similar photo to Wikimedia Commons - they need pictures of ancient sites for use on free sites like Wikipedia.

Log Text: Not a long walk, but very arduous and up a fairly steep rough track, but worth it, awesome views, note from the 1:25000 OS map the nearest parking place (end of the road) is 2 fields away.

Tyfos submitted by vicky on 7th Jun 2002. Tyfos Circle, Llandrillo, Denbighshire GR: SJ028388
This fantastic little circle lies in a farmer's field adjacent to a country lane near Llandrillo. Around 20 stones stand in a ring which has been described as either a denuded ringcairn or a free-standing stone circle. Although it is on private land it is well worth a visit and there are several gaps in the hedge making viewing easy.

Cerrig Pryfaid submitted by stonedowser on 23rd Feb 2002. This is a good circle, though not easily seen until you are actually standing by it. There are a couple of outliers associated with the circle and what dowses as a cairn also. More pictures and dowsing diagram on web pages. Ian.

NGR: SN09953702 (Landranger map 145/Outdoor Leisure North Pembrokeshire map (No 35))
Located 4km east of Newport on a public footpath. One of the most spectacular and famous monuments of its type it consists of a tilted capstone perched on three uprights. A blocking stone obstructs the doorway and a semi-circular forecourt is found at the southern end. Originally covered by a huge long mound - traces of possible kerbstones can still be fou...

Two remaining stones of Meini Gwyr once a spectacular circle (part of the Glandy Cross monument complex). Sketched by William Stukely in the 18th century as being one of the three main 'gorsedds' of Britain along with Boscawen-Un and the Merry Maidens in Cornwall.

Hoarstones submitted by baz on 24th Sep 2001. The Hoarstones Stone Circle,Black Marsh,nr Shelve,Shrops.(SO324999)
Access to this stone circle is more difficult than the map suggests.I took a circuitous route and, approaching from the south-west, across the fields I saw a circular patch of hay in a recently mown meadow. The tallest stone,at one metre, lies near the centre. This image was taken from inside the circle looking south past the central stone. Most of the other stones are hidden in the vegetation.

Country: Scotland (Argyll)
Visited: Yes on 1st Aug 1996. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 5 Access 4
Nether Largie standing stone submitted by caradoc68 on 18th Aug 2012. This standing stone is in the middle of a field, a short distance of the footpath. The farmer does not like you being there and might put a angry looking bull in the field to put visitors off. Cant find a lot written about this stone or why it seems to be leaning at 45 degrees and pointing to the southeast.

Temple Wood S submitted by funsize on 4th Jun 2007. This is a cracking site. Large cobble mound with slivers of upright slabs and a central cist. Very accessible and one of many impressive sites within a small area of the Kilmartin Valley. This shows the larger cairn, there is a smaller one ringed by trees a stones throw to the south west.
