Reenkilla

Reenkilla submitted by frogcottage42 on 22nd Feb 2010. This is the NW and tallest stone of this unusual group. Measuring 2.4m high and about .75m at it's widest. The smaller SE and SW stones can be seen to either side. This monument can only be reached by wading at low tide and is at serious risk of being damaged by falling trees which almost totally obscure it from view.

Knocknakilla

Knocknakilla submitted by Johnny on 21st Jun 2002. Knocknakilla Megalithic Complex, Co. Cork (W297 841): On the NW slopes of Musherabeg Mountain, Knocknakilla, the "stone of the church", is almost a twin to the megalithic complex at Kealkil (cf): both sites consist of a five-stone ring, a pair of standing stones and a radial cairn. Of the two pillar stones, one is now prostrate the other being the dominant feature in the complex standing 3.7m in height. The stones would originally have been just over 3.5m apart and aligned NNE-SSW....

Log Text: Island in the Gulf of Morbihan only accessible by boat, and site not open to the public (bird sanctuary). Boat tours of the gulf do pass by so you can see it from offshore. Actually managed to get on the Island via hiring a boat but nearly died on the return journey as the tidal currents are very strong. Large stones with half the circle submerged or destroyed by the currents.

The Soldiers Trench

Visited: Yes on 1st Jan 1987. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 3 Access 5

The Soldiers Trench

The Soldiers Trench submitted by andy_h on 4th May 2004. Also known as Brackenhall Green. Situated above Shipley Glen and overlooked by rock art on Baildon Moor to the north and east, this sad little circle lies near the road which destroyed a section of its northern end. It's hard to distinguish amongst the rock scatter and fallen stones, but a couple of (largely reconstructed) double arc settings give it away.

Bradup circle

Bradup circle submitted by andy_h on 4th May 2004. Visited here to investigate reports that the circle had been destroyed and yup, it's gone! A sad cluster of rocks heaved out and dumped near the style still bear JCB marks and the field in which the circle stood has been stripped down to the soil and is now grassed over. This was a listed, protected monument and I'm sure the landowner can be prosecuted if the destruction was carried out without permission. Local folklore also tells that a number of stones were taken from the circle to bui...

Ewden Beck submitted by PaulM on 31st Aug 2001. Close up of some of the stones at Ewden Beck stone circle (aka Broomhead I). GR:SK238966. Ewden Beck is the most northerly of all the known sites in the Peak District to the north-west of Sheffield and west of Stocksbridge and marked on the map as ‘enclosure’. The circle is named after the nearby stream of Ewden Beck and is located on a flat shelf just above the steep valley, in an area surrounded by a bank and ditch of unknown date. As far as the view is concerned, there is very little to...
