This is the front of the Rothbury Cross head, described as one of the finest pieces of Anglo-Saxon sculpture from the Kingdom of Northumbria. It is carved with scenes of the crucifixion and other motifs. The museum sign says it was made about 100 years after the Lindisfarne Gospels but "clearly belongs to the same artistic tradition." Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Would like to visit
Gawton's Well submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Nov 2008. Got around to visiting here yesterday, and it's brilliant. It's only 16 miles east for me, so returning won't be too much of an issue.
