Great North Museum (Anglo Saxon Stones)
Date Added: 26th Jan 2023
Site Type: Museum
Country: England (Tyne and Wear)
Visited: Would like to visit

Great North Museum (Anglo Saxon Stones) submitted by Anne T on 11th May 2018. This is the front of the Rothbury Cross head, described as one of the finest pieces of Anglo-Saxon sculpture from the Kingdom of Northumbria. It is carved with scenes of the crucifixion and other motifs. The museum sign says it was made about 100 years after the Lindisfarne Gospels but "clearly belongs to the same artistic tradition." From the collection of the Society of Antiquities of Newcastle upon Tyne. Submitted with the kind permission of the Great North Museum.

Gawton's Well

Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Staffordshire)

Gawton's Well submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Nov 2008. Got around to visiting here yesterday, and it's brilliant. It's only 16 miles east for me, so returning won't be too much of an issue. Very atmospheric woodland and castle like folly neaby too. I wouldn't be surprised if therein lies a connection with the well.
The spring lies within a large circular wall, in varying states of collapse, and within that is an elipse of yew trees - reminiscent of the ring of trees in "Nightmare Before Christmas". If this were Wales I'd start thinking this was...

Date Added: 26th Jan 2023
Site Type: Holed Stone
Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Would like to visit

Devil's Ring and Finger submitted by Paul Morgan on 25th Jul 2001. This site is all that remains of a long cairn. The Devil's Ring is a perforated septal stone similar to the one at the Bridestones in Cheshire. The Finger was, perhaps, a portal stone. Neither are in their original position.
Located near Mucklestone, Staffordshire and marked on OS map 127.
