St Peter's Well (Bradworthy)
Date Added: 10th Aug 2011
Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes
St Peter's Well (Bradworthy) submitted by KiwiBetsy on 11th Sep 2006. The well gives the impression of being forgotten as it sits in a hedge bank in a back lane of Bradworthy …. well, almost forgotten but not by the elderly gentleman who not only knew it’s location but, despite considerable difficulty in walking, insisted on accompanying us to the well. It was used as a water supply in the past and water still runs from it and into the lane. The door is locked and an ageing metal plate proclaims it as “St Peter’s Well”.

St Paternus's Well
Date Added: 8th Aug 2012
Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes
St Paternus's Well submitted by KiwiBetsy on 25th Sep 2006. The well has been recently restored and rededicated and features extensively on notices and school projects in the church. We were able to follow a trail through grass to the well as it had been decorated by children from the local school a couple of days earlier. It seems a pity to keep such a fine well locked.

To locate this well go past the church carry on following the road up the hill until you see a big metal gate to you right. You can park here and walk through the gate into a field. Carry on down through the wooden gate and you are close to the well. Look out for a small metal gate in front of you which says 'holy well' on it it. Go through this, down the steps and the well is in the undergrowth to your left.

Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes
St Neot's Well (Poundstock) submitted by KiwiBetsy on 16th Oct 2006. The wellhouse sits within a small stone wall enclosure. There are Latin mottoes carved into the edge of the roof and a latticed wooden door. On the front of the wellhouse to the left of the door is a fish that perhaps relates to the legend at St Neot’s other well behind the church in the Cornish village which bears his name (see St Neot's Well (St Neot)). To the right of the door is a Chi Rho symbol, one of the earliest cruciform symbols used by Christians. I have been told that the true d...

St Nectan's Well (Welcombe)
Date Added: 6th Jul 2011
Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes
St Nectan's Well (Welcombe) submitted by KiwiBetsy on 7th Oct 2006. St Nectan was a Dark Age Welsh saint with another well just up the road at Stoke.
Water from the well is used in the church for baptisms but on the day we visited, the well was in use for a different purpose. A cake tin ‘treasure chest’ had been hidden in it and a constant stream of children were delighted to find treasure in the well. St Nectan probably would never have expected his well to be used for such a purpose but all those children at least now know that the well exists.

St Nectan's Well (Stoke)
Date Added: 25th Jul 2011
Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes

St Nectan's Well (Stoke) submitted by KiwiBetsy on 11th Dec 2004. St Nectan’s Well is on the site of the hut where the 6th century Welsh hermit, St Nectan, is said to have returned carrying his head after being set upon by thieves who beheaded him.
Graffiti on the wooden door and the very ugly new steel grille indicate that today there is still a vandal problem but fortunately they now tend to deface rather than dehead.
A signed path from the main road follows a stream down to the well.

St Nectan's Glen submitted by Thorgrim on 29th Nov 2003. St Nectan's Glen has been described as amongst the ten most important spiritual sites in the country. (SX080885)
There never was a St Nectan, the name is a Christianised form of the Cornish water god - Nechtan. The way down to the water is steep and slippery, but so beautiful. Hundreds of clouties, messages and small offerings crowd the minute ledges of the steep sides of the glen. It can only be reached on foot, but it is well worth the effort.
The well house is at the entrance to the gl...

St Melor's Well
Date Added: 5th Oct 2011
Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes
St Melor's Well submitted by KiwiBetsy on 14th Oct 2006. Clear water pours from a groove in the front of the wellhouse and makes for a very wet approach to the well. The present structure dates from the 15th century as does the nearby church. There is a large niche in the front gable and several small ones inside. The water was considered to be a good remedy for horses sprained legs and was also used for baptism in the church. St Mellor's Well is a Scheduled and Grade II Listed monument.

St Mawnan's Well submitted by KiwiBetsy on 4th Sep 2006. St Mawnan’s Well is dedicated to St Mawnan, a Celtic saint.
From Mawnan village follow the signs for about 1 mile to the Mawnan Old Parish Church which is situated on the clifftop 4 miles southwest of Falmouth Bay. The church dates from the 13th century.
The well is on private land in the garden of The Rectory. A gate guards steep steps down to a sunken path leading to the well. St Mawnan’s Well is still blessed with fresh, clear water and the ambiance is magical. The well has bee...
