St Martin's Church (Cwmyoy)

St Martin's Church (Cwmyoy) submitted by Sunny100 on 8th Oct 2011. In the church of St Martin near Llanthony there is a rare carved cross/crucifix. Christ is shown, quite clearly, in torment and agony, on the cross. The beautifully carved crucifix style cross was mentioned by the Monmouthshire Antiquarian J.M.Lewis in 2000. The cross is early Medieval. It was venerated by pilgrims walking the pilgrims route to St David's. The church at Cwmyoy itself is of interest because it leans at different angles due to hillside subsidence. Photo source: St Martin...

St Seiriol's Well

St Seiriol's Well submitted by AngieLake on 5th Aug 2004. According to the invaluable CADW (Welsh Historical Monuments) booklet, 'Anglesey - A Guide to Ancient Monuments on the Isle of Anglesey' : "Traditionally, this well was thought to be associated with the early native Welsh monastic settlement at Penmon. Indeed, the well and adjacent 'cell', or chamber, were reputedly linked with St Seriol himself. What survives today, however, is probably very much later. The well is one of many examples in Wales linked with a local saint. Such wells were t...

St Winefrides Well

St Winefrides Well submitted by KiwiBetsy on 26th Nov 2004. Outdoor rectangular bathing pool containing the submerged St Beuno’s Stone which can be seen in the photo nearer to the front of the pool than the steps and hand rail in the rear left corner. The well chamber behind the pool is a fine example of late perpendicular architecture creating an almost square crypt covering the wellhead. Around the well, graceful columns rise to support an elaborate vaulted roof which in turn supports St Winifrede’s Chapel above. Once, steps led from the well up...

Stanton Drew - Avenue

Stanton Drew - Avenue submitted by TimPrevett on 18th Aug 2006. For evidence of the avenue, go past the NE circle, and look for the linear earthwork. The line is visible here on the LH corner of the picture; the group is on another part of the earthwork. Looking on the aerial pics, and on the ground, this can be traced from 3 o'clock to 12 o'clock outside the Great and NE circles. I did have an excellent picture of this from the ground, but have accidentally overwritten it!
