Carreg y Big (Shropshire)

Carreg y Big (Shropshire) submitted by TimPrevett on 22nd Jul 2004. This shows the stone just in front of the meeting of the three boundaries. "The Big Stone", as this translates, is as about as Welsh as it can be whilst still just in England! The Welsh border is not far, and Offa's Dyke makes its presence felt less than a mile away. The stone is on a south facing slope, leaning to the west, at the meeting of three boundaries - a fine example of a hoarstone, or boundary stone. The stone is carbonifeous limestone, and 6 feet tall by 4 by 3 approx. There is ...

Cwm Rhiwiau

Cwm Rhiwiau submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Jan 2006. This picture shows four stones on the NE arc of the circle, looking to the higher rocky outcrop to the NW, which provides a useful point of reference. I have visited the nearby Rhos y Beddau circle and rows twice since Feb 2000; on this, my third visit, I was determined to find the other reported circle, Cwm Rhiwiau. The stones are indeed there, the tallest stones no more than ankle height. We were able to locate the northern outlier, but missed the southern outlier. We found the diameter of...

Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant (Standing Stone)

Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant (Standing Stone) submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Jan 2006. The large re-used Bronze Age standing stone next to the road in the village. Once it was one of several stones here; now it's the only standing stone in the village. If the archaeological database is interpreted correctly, the schoolhouse behind had a mound where the stone was formerly situated - before the school house was constructed. Parking around the bend as seen, ideal for visiting the village.

Llwyn Bryn Dinas submitted by TimPrevett on 5th Jan 2006. The nearby hillfort of Llwyn Bryn Dinas would have had a commanding view over this east - west valley. The upmost part of the hill's shape is part of the defences, clearly visible either side as you go along the Tanat Valley.

Long Low

Long Low submitted by TimPrevett on 30th Jul 2006. Looking along Long Low to the SSW. Two interesting things about Long Low: 1) It is the only long barrow in Staffordshire, and 2) It has rounded ends, which are either described as two round barrows, or as rounded terminals. This is very reminiscent of the Broadmayne Bank Barrow in Dorset. Drystone walling intersects it in several places, and I styal is incorporated into one of the western side walls.
