The Battle Stone (Ilam)
Date Added: 3rd Apr 2022
Site Type: Ancient Cross
Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Would like to visit

The Battle Stone (Ilam) submitted by TimPrevett on 30th Jul 2006. The Battle Stone - remains of an 11th Century Cross in the grounds of Ilam Hall. For most straightforward access, leave the church with the two Saxon Crosses, left to the river, then before the river turn right for a pleasant walk along its side. The cross is on the right hand side after about 10 minutes walking, as a wide meadow arcs to the left. The cross was not discovered until 1840, and the name, one must suppose, is down to the imagination of those who discovered it.

Oldox Camp submitted by Bladup on 22nd Apr 2013. There are 2 humps here that seem like the natural entrance to Oxton camp, the one in the picture is the slightly bigger one [called Robin Hood's Pot] and the start of the other is going out the photo on the left, I think they're natural but one has a little barrow on it.

Bedd Gorfal submitted by LivingRocks on 19th May 2005. Bedd Gorfal circle photographed very late in the day after a visit to Bryn Cader Faner, this was one of those ‘Just about time for one more before dark visits!’ and by this stage the light was extremely poor for photography, Tripodded at ISO400 plus a little brightening in Photoshop was needed to get this still somewhat grainy image.

St Mary and All Saints (Checkley) submitted by TimPrevett on 8th May 2007. The three 9th Century Anglo-Scandinavian cross shafts in Checkley Churchyard. One would be fine! A superb group, each around 5 feet tall. The church and churchyard are fascinating. If not open a key is available very nearby - mail me for details. An unusual Saxon font is at the rear of the church, as well as a good guidebook for £2 as of 08/05/07. The churchyard is very nearly completely circled by yew trees, most of them relatively juvenile, but a couple are noticeably larger in girth. On the ...

St Digain (Llangernyw)
Date Added: 23rd May 2022
Site Type: Ancient Cross
Country: Wales (Conwy)
Visited: Yes on 15th May 2022. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 5 Access 4

St Digain (Llangernyw) submitted by TimPrevett on 23rd Sep 2007. At St Digain's, Llangernyw, there are two ancient cross incised stones on the south side of the building, both crosses fave west. The design on the western stone is near impossible to make out without a guidebook to hand. There are also two rough, unshaped stones which appear out of place amongst the memorials nearby. St Digain's also has a yew reputed to be 4,000 years old, which is worth a look.
