Roman Milestone (Temple Sowerby)
Date Added: 28th Nov 2022
Site Type: Marker Stone
Country: England (Cumbria)
Visited: Would like to visit

Roman Milestone (Temple Sowerby) submitted by Anne T on 6th Apr 2018. Close up of the southern face of the milestone. If there was an inscription, it has long been scoured away by the winds and rains. Today the A66 Temple Sowerby by-pass rushes by just to the west of this milestone. To think this has sat by a routeway for around 2,000 years.

Round Hill Barrow submitted by Infinite_Fate on 1st Jan 2006. Taken with the same wildly inappropriate film as Swarkestone Butts. This is a shot looking East from the track mentioned above; clearly as it would be illegal for me to be there taking the photograph I had to ask the piskies to do the photography for me.

One of the remaining stones.Smelting Hill is an embanked stone circle with only two stones remaining to the south-east of the site. One of the stones stands approximately 0.75m in height while the other is lying flat. The two are placed approximately 3.5m apart. The embankment has disappeared in the eastern half of the circle, but can still be faintly traced to the west. This bank would originally have been about 1.5m to 2m...

It is the first such structure to have been built in the English Midlands in thousands of years.
The monument is inspired by Neolithic barrows built around 5,500 years ago, and following the constructions of the Long Barrow at All Cannings, Wiltshire and the Sacred Stones Barrow at St Neots, Cambridgeshire.
The barrow contains niches for the placement of c...

St Digain (Llangernyw) submitted by TimPrevett on 23rd Sep 2007. At St Digain's, Llangernyw, there are two ancient cross incised stones on the south side of the building, both crosses fave west. The design on the western stone is near impossible to make out without a guidebook to hand. There are also two rough, unshaped stones which appear out of place amongst the memorials nearby. St Digain's also has a yew reputed to be 4,000 years old, which is worth a look.

St Mary and All Saints (Checkley) submitted by TimPrevett on 8th May 2007. The three 9th Century Anglo-Scandinavian cross shafts in Checkley Churchyard. One would be fine! A superb group, each around 5 feet tall. The church and churchyard are fascinating. If not open a key is available very nearby - mail me for details. An unusual Saxon font is at the rear of the church, as well as a good guidebook for £2 as of 08/05/07. The churchyard is very nearly completely circled by yew trees, most of them relatively juvenile, but a couple are noticeably larger in girth. On the ...

St Marys (Astbury) submitted by TimPrevett on 23rd Apr 2006. Part of a Saxon cross shaft to the rear of the Church, above a doorway in the North West corner. Spirals and curved motifs are visble on the outward facing side. An Anglo Saxon church once stood on the site. Also of interest is a 2,000 year old hollow yew tree to the North East of the original churchyard. If visiting in April, the triangular green to the west of the church is covered in daffodils, making a most breathtaking spectacle. Access to the church subject to church opening. Church websit...
