Carreg y Big (Shropshire)
Date Added: 1st Mar 2022
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes
Carreg y Big (Shropshire) submitted by TimPrevett on 22nd Jul 2004. This shows the stone just in front of the meeting of the three boundaries.
"The Big Stone", as this translates, is as about as Welsh as it can be whilst still just in England! The Welsh border is not far, and Offa's Dyke makes its presence felt less than a mile away.
The stone is on a south facing slope, leaning to the west, at the meeting of three boundaries - a fine example of a hoarstone, or boundary stone. The stone is carbonifeous limestone, and 6 feet tall by 4 by 3 approx. There is ...

Cwm Rhiwiau
Date Added: 1st Mar 2022
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Yes

Cwm Rhiwiau submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Jan 2006. This picture shows four stones on the NE arc of the circle, looking to the higher rocky outcrop to the NW, which provides a useful point of reference.
I have visited the nearby Rhos y Beddau circle and rows twice since Feb 2000; on this, my third visit, I was determined to find the other reported circle, Cwm Rhiwiau.
The stones are indeed there, the tallest stones no more than ankle height. We were able to locate the northern outlier, but missed the southern outlier. We found the diameter of...

Ysbyty Cynfyn Stone Circle submitted by Johnny on 10th Oct 2001. Ysbyty Cynfyn "Stone Circle" (SN 752 791)
This readily accessible site is situated alongside the A4120 running south from Ponterwyd towards Devil's Bridge. The circle is not marked as an antiquity on recent OS maps but the church itself is easily found. Despite recent dissenting opinion, it has generally been accepted that this is an example of the early Christian Church adopting an ancient site, in this case an embanked Bronze Age stone circle, presumably in an attempt to "des...

Big Moor submitted by bec-zog on 5th Jul 2005. A set of photographs of the numerous cairns, cysts, barrows etc, which are located on Big Moor, Derbyshire.
Most of these can be found with a bit of diligent search near to the Barbrook circles. I did not log the co-ordinates
of each site.
Can any eagle eyed readers identify any of the sites shown here more exactly?

Barbrook 3 submitted by PaulM on 31st Aug 2001. Barbrook III Stone Circle, Big Moor, Derbyshire
GR: SK283773
Located to the north-east of Barbrook stream and reservoir, Barbrook III is very difficult to make out, as most of the stones are almost completely overgrown by the moorland grass and partially covered in peat.
The stones, mostly leaning or collapsed, stand in a bank approximately 26m by 23.5m in diameter, making it one of the largest circles in the Peak District. The bank is broken by three gaps, with one to the east-north-eas...

Din Lligwy submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Jul 2002. Lligwy Ancient Settlement SH497861
This settlement, NW from Moelfre and not far from the Lligwy burial chamber is huge! A short walk from parking space for maybe 3 cars, through woodland, this location can occupy a considerable amount of time exploring the nooks & crannies of this probable 4th century AD settlement.
