St Martin's Church (Cwmyoy)
Date Added: 19th Feb 2018
Site Type: Ancient Cross
Country: Wales (Monmouthshire)
Visited: Yes
St Martin's Church (Cwmyoy) submitted by Sunny100 on 8th Oct 2011. In the church of St Martin near Llanthony there is a rare carved cross/crucifix. Christ is shown, quite clearly, in torment and agony, on the cross. The beautifully carved crucifix style cross was mentioned by the Monmouthshire Antiquarian J.M.Lewis in 2000.
The cross is early Medieval. It was venerated by pilgrims walking the pilgrims route to St David's. The church at Cwmyoy itself is of interest because it leans at different angles due to hillside subsidence.

This magnificent standing stone lives beside the busy A40 just inside the entrance to the Welsh Brigade army camp just to the south of Crickhowell. Over 4 metres high, “The Growing Stone” looks most impressive, and has a pleasant grass and trees area around it.

Great Oak Stone

Great Oak Stone submitted by cerrig on 8th May 2012. This is the view from the South East, on a bearing of approx. 300 degrees North West, along the very flat and dead vertical "smiley"faced Northern flank. If someone hadn't thoughtfully planted a tree in the way you would be able to see that this stone is aligned on the top of Myarth hill (not the summit), beyond this the line goes to Bwllch standing stone, out of site from here. Spookily, if you followed the line in the opposite direction it goes directly through the house I used to live in , in...

Carn Goch (Powys) submitted by thecaptain on 5th May 2004. Carn Goch, Chambered Tomb in Powys, SO212177
The remains of a roughly circular mound, once covered with large trees lies inside a children’s playground, just beside a little housing estate across the river Usk from Crickhowell. Most of these big trees are now just stumps. A moderately sized capstone to a chamber can be seen towards the eastern side.

While on a stone hunting day in and around the Black Mountains, the murk on the hills cleared enough for me to get this picture of the Crug Hywel, or Table Mountain fort from near the Llangenny Stones - which I didnt find.

At Bwlch, the A40 makes a large hairpin bend to get up the hillside. In the field which is largely surrounded by this road is this Standing Stone, which is about 2 metres tall.

Ty Illtyd Chambered Cairn submitted by Johnny on 18th Sep 2001. Ty Illtyd Chambered Long Cairn (Powys, S0 098 264)
This site, high up on a hilltop ridge above Llamhamlach, commands panoramic views along the floodplains of the Usk river. The north-facing chamber of the tomb, with capstone in situ, lies just off-centre in a much denuded oval shaped mound 23.0 metres in length and 15.5 metres wide. Several upright stones outside the chamber may once have delineated a forecourt area suggesting that Ty Illtyd may have been a simple terminal chamber tomb. The...

Ffostil South Chambered Long Barrow
Date Added: 19th Feb 2018
Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Yes. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 4

Ffostill South Long Cairn submitted by Johnny on 4th Jul 2002. Ffostill South Chambered Long Barrow, Powys (SO 179 349):
Marked as long barrows on the map. On private land 3km north-east of Talgarth, this is one of two grass covered mounds visible from the road and situated in the same field.
The southern of these two Neolithic cairns is the better preserved and consists of a single 3m long gallery grave at the north-eastern end of a 33m long cairn. The chamber had 10 uprights supporting 2 capstones which are now displaced.

Ffostyll North is slightly the larger of the two barrows in this field. It lies east to west and has two or three chambers. The main one, at the eastern end is ruinous. There was a small chamber in the centre of the northern side of the barrow and possibly a third chamber at the western end.
