Alexander Keiller Museum
Date Added: 27th Jun 2012
Site Type: Museum
Country: England (Wiltshire)
Visited: Yes on 1st Jan 2011. My rating: Condition 5 Ambience 4 Access 4

Alexander Keiller Museum submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2008. The door to the Barn Gallery at Avebury. The barn is kept very cool in order to preserve the structure of the 17th century building, so it only houses a few archaeological exhibits - according to the NT leaflet it 'tells the story of the landscape through a fully interactive display'. Most of the archaeology collection is in the nearby Stables Gallery. Both are covered by the same admission ticket, unless you are a member of the National Trust (in which case both galleries are free).

Date Added: 27th Jun 2012

Country: England (Wiltshire)
Visited: Yes on 27th Jun 2011. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 3 Access 4

Falkner's Circle submitted by Thorgrim on 11th Mar 2004. Just one stone remains standing now. Where are the others? They are broken and scattered in the adjacent hedgerows. Don't you just love farmers - custodians of the land! The circle was described by Falkner in 1840 and a plan by W. Long shows that there were 12 stones in a circle of 37m circumference. So the damage has been done since then.
The circle is sign-posted from the road alongside the West Kennet Avenue and is just a quarter of a mile along the footpath that follows the field ...

Chanctonbury Ring submitted by Creative Commons on 19th Mar 2011. Chanctonbury Hill is the highest point here and affords views to the North Downs and the Isle of Wight, I was even able to make out the towers of Fawley Oil Refinery in the evening sun. First inhabited by tribesman from the Bronze Age, the defensive works are from the Iron Age, whilst the Romans built a temple in the middle and the Saxons used it as a fort. Throughout the ages it has been used as a beacon and had become a tourist attraction by the early 19th century. The ring has also been assoc...

Stoney Littleton submitted by TheCaptain on 18th Mar 2005. Stoney Littleton barrow viewed from the west.
Its a cracking little barrow, with the most wonderful passage and chambers inside, and the powers that be have even left a decent sized area around it free of any farming activity. A lovely sunny day, but some of the walk to the barrow was horrendously muddy.
The fields around the barrow had recently been ploughed, a crop of beet of some sort having been the last grown. While walking back after my visit, I found a bit of the lovely golden colou...
