Corscombe submitted by enkidu41 on 20th Jul 2004. ST 514048
The 3 stones in the background are probably the remains of the crescentic forecourt of a chambered long barrow similar to Grey Mare & Her Colts. The centre stone is nearly 6'6" high. The stones in the foreground lie to the west and may be the end stones of the forecourt.

Cosdon Hill Cairn Circle

Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Would like to visit

Cosdon Hill Cairn Circle submitted by TheCaptain on 10th Jun 2004. Cosdon Hill Cairn Circle, Dartmoor, Devon SX643916
On a flatter shelf of land on the eastern side of Cosdon Hill are the splendid remains of a cairn and treble stone row.
The remains of the cairn at the uphill end of the rows is approx 8 metres in diameter, and has been substantially messed about with. Despite this, there are the clear remains of a double cist in the centre of the cairn, the downhill one of which still has its capstone largely in place. Several stones also remain in place...

Cosdon Hill Multiple Stone Rows submitted by TheCaptain on 10th Jun 2004. Cosdon Hill Multiple Stone Rows, Dartmoor, Devon SX643917
The three parallel rows run off down the hillside from the cairn in an easterly direction, for a distance of at least 140 metres. Each of the rows has a large slab placed across the rows at its end by the cairn. The rows are not straight, and curve slightly south and then to the north down the hill.
A smashing place to while away some time.

Cosdon Hill Summit Cairns submitted by TheCaptain on 9th Jun 2004. Cosdon Hill Summit Cairns, Dartmoor, Devon SX636915 to SX637917
The remains of five cairns can clearly be found at the summit of Cosdon Hill, approximately following the ridge of the hill in a north-south manner.
The fifth cairn at the north of the hill is a very impressive beast. This cairn must be nearly complete except for a small depression within the centre. The outer edges of the cairn are nicely held in place by a ring of large stone slabs, and within the cairn structure itself can...

Crock of Gold submitted by thecaptain on 1st Aug 2006. The Crock of Gold is a fine example of a Dartmoor cairn and cist.
I wonder just what gold was found here in the past. All I found in the bottom of the cist was a frog!

Cut Hill Stone Row submitted by Andy B on 10th Apr 2010. Granite Stone Row
Here is the roof of Dartmoor, from the top you can see right all across Dartmoor. In the picture is a piece of granite probably Megalithic in age and is in a series of stones running along the top of this hill. This row is unique within Dartmoor as it the only one with equal spacing within the row and above 600m, 100m above any other row in Dartmoor. The peat has washed away from around the stone but not from underneath, meaning the granite sticks out above the ground.

Down Ridge submitted by Brian Byng on 7th Feb 2002. Down Ridge.
SX 6550 7210 25m dia 9 stones remain. Must have been spectacular at one time with magnificent views to the northern horizon. The site is in poor condition
with many stones lying around that may have been from the circle. There is a single small standing stone on the hillside 100m SE from the circle. It is almost certainly prehistoric.
view of the circle looking North.

Down Tor stone row submitted by TimPrevett on 10th Jun 2002. This is where it all began for me: Down Tor, on Dartmoor. A chance encounter on a beautiful day and night with an awesome stone circle and row. This is where the stones bug bit me! Taken with a simple automatic 35mm camera.

Drizzlecombe cairn 13 submitted by Brian Byng on 7th Feb 2002. View looking east of the large cist at Drizzlecombe which Burl claims has a row running in an Easterly direction in line with the tilted slab. I looked very carefully & found no sign of such a row. None of my references mention such a row & I have asked around those who should know - again without success. I think this is another of Burls iffy sites.

Drizzlecombe menhir 2 submitted by TheCaptain on 13th Jun 2007. This magnificent menhir at the downhill end of row 2 (or C) at Drizzlecombe is the largest on Dartmoor, and said to be "by far the finest in the west of England".
I wouldnt argue with that.
