Bartlow Hills

Bartlow Hills submitted by Thorgrim on 17th Jul 2003. This is the largest barrow in Britain and very few people know of it. This Romano-British site at Bartlow is on the Essex/Cambridgeshire border at TL 586453. Originally the largest group in Europe when there were seven enormous barrows here. Then the now disused railway came through and flattened four of them! The largest survivor is 45 feet high and the highest in Britain by far. The wooden staicase gives access to the top without causing erosion. You can then look down on the other ...

Corscombe submitted by enkidu41 on 20th Jul 2004. ST 514048 The 3 stones in the background are probably the remains of the crescentic forecourt of a chambered long barrow similar to Grey Mare & Her Colts. The centre stone is nearly 6'6" high. The stones in the foreground lie to the west and may be the end stones of the forecourt.

Cosdon Hill Cairn Circle

Cosdon Hill Cairn Circle submitted by TheCaptain on 10th Jun 2004. Cosdon Hill Cairn Circle, Dartmoor, Devon SX643916 On a flatter shelf of land on the eastern side of Cosdon Hill are the splendid remains of a cairn and treble stone row. The remains of the cairn at the uphill end of the rows is approx 8 metres in diameter, and has been substantially messed about with. Despite this, there are the clear remains of a double cist in the centre of the cairn, the downhill one of which still has its capstone largely in place. Several stones also remain in place...

Lugbury

Lugbury submitted by theCaptain on 9th Feb 2010. Was passing by Lugbury at the weekend, a damp and misty February day, so I called in for a look to see how it was faring, and was pleasantly surprised. Most of the growth has been cleared from around the stones, and most of the junk and tree trunks have been cleared from the remains of the mound.

Lower Piles

Lower Piles submitted by simcon on 29th Aug 2003. SX645603 Lower Piles Hill Cist, Dartmoor Devon. This is marked on the OS map as one of a pair of cairns, but it's obviously a cist. The view is looking west where you can see Burford Down which has rows and a circle. My OS map doesn't show access for Burford Down and I did find it surrounded by a boundary wall and bracken so I didn't visit it. Right of this picture is the remains of a settlement at SX644605. Spurrells Cross is also behind me to the left up the hill (cairns/rows/circle).

Cut Hill Stone Row

Cut Hill Stone Row submitted by Andy B on 10th Apr 2010. Granite Stone Row Here is the roof of Dartmoor, from the top you can see right all across Dartmoor. In the picture is a piece of granite probably Megalithic in age and is in a series of stones running along the top of this hill. This row is unique within Dartmoor as it the only one with equal spacing within the row and above 600m, 100m above any other row in Dartmoor. The peat has washed away from around the stone but not from underneath, meaning the granite sticks out above the ground. C...
