Sittaford Stone Circle

Sittaford Stone Circle submitted by davep on 26th May 2014. The Sittaford Stone Circle was discovered in 2007 as announced in January 2014 issue of the Devon Archaeological Society Newsletter. The stones are recumbent and/or buried. They are located at SX 63019 82813 not far to the west of Sittaford Tor. The Grey Wethers double stone circle is about 1km to the east-northeast. These pictures were taken in the rain on 25/5/14 which is why the last ones look blurry - water on the lens! Many of the stones were buried and have been uncovered which in the wet ...

Down Ridge

Down Ridge submitted by Brian Byng on 7th Feb 2002. Down Ridge. SX 6550 7210 25m dia 9 stones remain. Must have been spectacular at one time with magnificent views to the northern horizon. The site is in poor condition with many stones lying around that may have been from the circle. There is a single small standing stone on the hillside 100m SE from the circle. It is almost certainly prehistoric. view of the circle looking North.

Stalldon Row

Stalldon Row submitted by thecaptain on 22nd Sep 2006. The northern end of the row has 4 wonderful large (2 metres plus) stones still standing, which can be seen from miles away all over the southern moor, and look in many ways like walkers on the hilltop. Seen here looking to the north, the wild moorland stretches off into the distance.

Burford Down Stone Row

Burford Down Stone Row submitted by Tom_Bullock on 9th Jul 2002. The Burford Down stone row, one of the finest in Dartmoor, shows evidence of recent damage by whatever farmer is running huge tractors across the fields. S(he) has been driving right through the rows (perpendicular to them) along several tracks. I saw evidence of at least 3 stones that had been dislodged and pushed aside by the wheels of the tractor. I don't know if there is a procedure for reporting such damage, or even if the farmer is liable for such damage. I have never, in my 12 year...

Fice's Well

Fice's Well submitted by KiwiBetsy on 23rd Sep 2006. The well stands surrounded by a low stone wall which was built by convicts (it’s only a very short distance to the prison) in the 19th century. We found Fice’s Well on a very murky Dartmoor day and were probably lucky not to suffer the same fate as John Fitz and his wife. One day they were riding on the moor when the piskies conjured up a thick, impenetrable mist which resulted in the couple being hopelessly lost. For hours they rode in circles unable to find their way off the moor. The ...
