The Plague Stone

The Plague Stone submitted by Vicky on 18th Oct 2001. THE PLAGUE STONE , Higher Sutton, near Macclesfield SJ9561469227
This wayside cross, possibly a Christianised standing stone, was apparently the place where goods were left by the healthy for sale to the plague-stricken. The latter took the goods and left the money in a pot of water. Interestingly the 1904 OS map shows an isolation hospital located near by.

Bosley Minn 4 & 5 submitted by Vicky on 18th Oct 2001. THE MINN END LANE IV & V STANDING STONES, Wincle, near Macclesfield, Cheshire SJ9402766213 & SJ9402866216
The northern-most pair of stones on Minn End Lane. Again these two are probably prehistoric but adapted to gate posts. They both lean to differing extents and are more weathered than II and III. Both are listed on the County Sites and Monuments Record as a Bronze Age standing stones. (There are two other stones in between these and the at SJ9400366030 & SJ9400366032 However, these two ...

Theses two 'gateposts' stand along the line of the same wall as the three authentic Bronze Age standing stones. They could just be modern gateposts, but it seems strange that every other piece of stone has been moved from the wall apart from these two.

Woodhouse End submitted by PaulM on 30th Aug 2001. WOODHOUSE END BEAKER BARROW, GAWSWORTH, MACCLESFIELD, CHESHIRE
NGR: SJ915695 (Landranger map 118)
Located close to the A523 Macclesfield to Leek road (and visible from the carpark of the Fools Nook pub) this beaker barrow was constructed in three phases. Excavations took place in the late 1960's but were delayed by the Foot and Mouth epidemic.

The field beneath the church is supposedly where the deeply grooved Satan Stone was rolled to, having originally been where the church is over 800 years ago. This view looks NNE to Shutlingsloe - a very important landmark and hill for the area.
