Fernworthy circle

Date Added: 16th Nov 2011
Site Type: Stone Circle Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 20th May 2011. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3 Access 3

Fernworthy circle

Fernworthy circle submitted by AngieLake on 4th Nov 2005. The southeast-to-south arc of the circle, seen from inside its area, with the angular south stone at the right of pic. The left-hand stones of the main south row lead down towards the light green fir tree. In fact, there are many small stones lying in the coarse brownish grass, which are quite difficult to pick out as rows. 'Must try harder' next time - when it is drier weather!

Log Text: Not sure who designated this access as "5." It cannot be driven to nor is it a short stroll, but it is well worth the long walk. And its condition is not a "1," as someone designated, but at least a "3." Nearby are the remains of the 12th Century St. Piran's Lost Church and the buried 6th Century St. Piran's Oratory, thought to be one of the most ancient Christian foundations on mainland Britain, now designated by a marker.

Boskednan circle is on slightly lower ground not far from here, and on an alignment between the 'barrow'/cairn and the mine building. The flat sides of the pointed stones face north/south. (This pic was taken at 4pm in March 2004). The stones sit on a higher ridge at 227m.
