Date Added: 18th Nov 2013

Country: Mexico (Campeche)
Visited: Yes on 28th Jul 2004. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 5 Access 4

Chicanná submitted by davidmorgan on 3rd Feb 2009. Structure XX - this is the highest building at Chicanná, its layout is almost quadrangular, composed of two levels and oriented towards the cardinal points. The lower section has eleven rooms and the upper part four. The principal facade is on the south side.
The facade of the upper temple preserves the remains of the typical motif of the Chenes region: a complete, gigantic, zoomorphic mask. In each of the corners there are columns of masks of the "prominent nose" god which guards the mout...

Xpuhil submitted by davidmorgan on 9th Feb 2009. Structure I - also known as the Building of the Three Towers. It constitutes an atypical example of the Rio Bec style due to the presence of the third, or central, tower. It has a maximum height of 18m and its centre line runs more than 53m along a perfect north-south alignment.
From the site information board. (It looks a few degrees off on Google Earth).

Log Text: It seems more work has been done since I was there. Worth the two day walk getting there though. Hope they can keep excavating, and finally find the evidence that , imho, at one point Maya and Olmec shared one general culture and were not distinct populations...

Log Text: very small site, few not very tall structures, looted. A local inhabitant walked us there, a 5 minute walk from the main road. One looters tunnel grants you access to see some monochrome painted stucco, which indicates the site was already established in Pre-Classical time. Mind you, you'll have to go belly in through the bat dung covering the floor...

Log Text: The site is so fantastic to visit due to the presence of the lake and the pristine forest around. We saw many more animals then at eg Tikal. It must have been quite an important place, given that like Tikal certain structures are in Teotihuacan style, which would suppose a permanent trade agency or an ambassador to that Mexican culture resided here.
