Cournols allée couverte

Cournols allée couverte submitted by thecaptain on 6th Sep 2006. Said to be an allée couverte, its not much like any other allée couvertes I have seen! It looks more to me like a sort of double dolmen, with two chambers beside one another. The entrance would have been from the east, and central to the two chambers.

This is a lovely menhir standing four and three quarter metres tall at the top of the high hills near the village of Fohet, commune of Aydat, in Puy-de-Dôme. The views from here are breathtaking in all directions. To the northwest the Chaine-des-Puys range of volcanoes, with Puy-de-Dome standing high above the others in the line of almost cartoon perfect cones.

Pierre Plantée (Lèque)

Pierre Plantée (Lèque) submitted by ocdolmen on 7th Aug 2006. La Pierre Plantée de Lussan (la Peyro Plantado) is the tallest menhir in Gard "département" with 5.60 metres. This standing-stone is also called "la Lèque" (in occitan "la Leca"). The occitan language has kept old celt words in its vocabulary as "leca" (ie "the stone") which comes from gaulish "lech" (as in "cromlech")
