These altars are all on the east side of the town. This is altar 1. The other side of that wall and handrail on the right is a spectacular sheer cliff that I recall being even more death defying (i.e. higher) than the other two on the opposite ridge.

Used as structure for the Duomo (cathedral) with a new Baroque facade and the space between the columns filed in with masonry. Rome conquered Sicily in 211 BCE as part of the Second Punic War eventhough Sicilly was largely Greek. The Scientist Archimedes was killed during the conquest of Siracusa

Cemmo 3 submitted by Martin_L on 2nd Jun 2009. Front side: 5 rows of greatly stylized anthropomorphic engravings. There are also fantastic arrangements of deer, other animals and axe-like objects.
It is exhibited behind glass in a protective shelter. A mirror-construction was established to enable the visitors to see the carvings on both main sides and the engraved narrow side.
