Site Type: Multiple Stone Rows / Avenue

Visited: Yes on 27th Jun 2019. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 4 Access 4

Merrivale North Row submitted by stewart on 12th Oct 2003. Grid Ref SX 555 747
There are two, main, rows at Merrivale - North and South.
The north row consists of two lines of stones, aligned east -west and nearly 200m long.
However, the two lines of stones are only about 1m apart so you can only just walk between them. It has larger stones at the west end and a blocking stone at the east.
The southern row doesn't start or finish on the same alignment, is not parallel to the northern one and was, probably, not built at the same time.

Date Added: 27th Jun 2019
Site Type: Stone Row / Alignment
Country: England (Devon)

Merrivale Stone Slabs 1 and 2 submitted by AngieLake on 1st May 2009. Slab 1 with the hole in it, here looking towards the SW and the standing stone in the distance.
(A separate photo will show the hole in close-up).
Jack Walker says that this hole and the menhir align with the place on the horizon where the winter solstice sun sets. He wonders if this is the original Winter solstice sunset alignment at Merrivale.
