Great Cursus Barrows, Stonehenge

Great Cursus Barrows, Stonehenge submitted by TimPrevett on 18th Aug 2004. One of the most impressive bell barrows - which we thought resembled landed 'flying saucers'.

Log Text: The Great Cursus Barrows are obvious on the horizon viewed from the stone circle. It is more prominent than the nearby Great Cursus. It's a shame that the majority of visitors to Stonehenge take the bus to and from the stone circle missing out on the less spectacular barrow cemetery and cursus.

Stonehenge.

Stonehenge. submitted by AngieLake on 22nd Feb 2012. This old photo-postcard is captioned 'Altar Stone', with a small white arrow pointing to the enigmatic stone which lies partly buried underneath the fallen lintel [156] and upright [55] of the Great Trilithon.

Log Text: I was travelling to Cornwall on the A303 when Stonehenge popped up on the horizon. I was magnetically drawn to revisit one of the great wonders of the world. The difference between my 2 visits, 14 years apart, was that I appreciated the surrounding barrows near Stonehenge so much more.

Bawd Stone

Bawd Stone submitted by vicky on 2nd Sep 2001. The Bawdstone, possible dolmen, near Hen Cloud, The Roaches, Staffordshire GR: SJ009620 This so called ‘dolmen’ was described by antiquarian J.D. Sainter in his book ‘Scientific Rambles Round Macclesfield’ in 1878: "At a short distance south of Rock Hall, there may be observed on the opposite side of Hen Cloud a block of gritstone, which upon approaching it, is found to be rested or balanced, in the first place, upon a short edge of rock and then upon two upright and pointed pilla...

Log Text: The Bawd Stone is located between The Roaches and Hen Cloud. It may be a natural dolmen enhanced to locate a burial below the massive stone. The setting is certainly spectacular.

There is parking available at SK0061961882 c. 30 yards SE of the start of the path. Follow the path for c. 300 yards uphill to reach a crossroad. Turn R for c. 30 yards until a faint path veers L. Take this path E for c. 50 yards to reach the Bawd Stone.

Hautville's Quoit

Hautville's Quoit submitted by bec-zog on 29th Oct 2003. Hautville Quoit. Late neolithic remnant. Located @ ST 602,638 (NNE 0f Stanton Drew Great Circle) Aligns with centre of the Great Circle & the SW Circle. Possibly part of a larger, now destroyed, structure.

Log Text: The remaining stone of Hauteville's Quoit half-buried next to a hedge requires more imagination than I have to reconstruct the monument. One for the completists.

Stoney Littleton

Stoney Littleton submitted by TheCaptain on 18th Mar 2005. Stoney Littleton barrow viewed from the west. Its a cracking little barrow, with the most wonderful passage and chambers inside, and the powers that be have even left a decent sized area around it free of any farming activity. A lovely sunny day, but some of the walk to the barrow was horrendously muddy. The fields around the barrow had recently been ploughed, a crop of beet of some sort having been the last grown. While walking back after my visit, I found a bit of the lovely golden colou...

Log Text: This restored long barrow is an unexpected gem, given its relative isolation. The restoration is more sympathetic than Newgrange.

Robin Hood's Stone submitted by vicky on 24th Jan 2004. A close up of Robin Hood's stone showing the weathering grooves.

Log Text: Robin Hood's Stone is the definitive example of an anachronism, a standing stone in an urban environment. The green iron railings which imprison the standing stone emphasise it's alienation.

Arthur's Stone

Arthur's Stone

Arthur's Stone submitted by Adam Stanford on 21st Jul 2006. Taken during recent work to investigate the full extent of the covering mound for this monument. Cheers AS.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: There is no logical reason that the amount of effort required to reach a site should affect your interpretation of the site. However I have found that I undervalue sites adjacent to the roadside in comparison with sites in the middle of nowhere. That said, the remains of Arthur's Stone are quite impressive.

Avening burial chambers

Avening burial chambers submitted by theCaptain on 20th Apr 2010. The entrance stones of the SE chamber. No remains of the supposed porthole entrance can be seen, its now buried below ground level after the hillslide.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The burial chambers have been artfully placed in the rectory garden in Avening, however, in principle I do not agree with people removing parts of an ancient monument for their own gratification. The original site is devalued and the new site is questionable at best.

Log Text: Crickley Hill Enclosure is a large space that requires imagination to interpret the remains. The most impressive feature is the Iron Age Rampart at the entrance to the Enclosure.
