Log Text: A nice little dolmen in the middle of vines marked by a single tree. It is not visible until you are right on top of it so coordinates 44.689378, 0.395161 are more useful than the ones currently given for the site

Menhir des Goulards submitted by oldman on 11th Apr 2019. View of the menhir from the south west. You can see how steeply the ground drops away to the north.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: It is right on the edge of a small wood surrounded by vines. You either have to approach through a vineyard from the North of the stone or along tracks from the South between vineyards. It is not a very big stone but it is covered on the wood side with sets of parallel lines. Rock Art?
Curton Dolmen
Date Added: 11th Apr 2019
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen
Country: France (Aquitaine:Gironde (33))
Visited: Yes on 7th Apr 2019

Curton Dolmen submitted by thecaptain on 10th Jan 2006. One capstone remains on the two rows of sidestones which can be traced for about 8 metres.
Apparently 8 bodies were found within it when the chamber was excavated in 1904.

Log Text: It's a steep climb up to this dolmen but worth it. On our second visit to this site the sat nav brought us in from a different direction so there was no steep climb and we could take the car along a track almost up to the site. Also it was well signposted.
Peyrefitte
Date Added: 1st Oct 2018
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: France (Aquitaine:Gironde (33))

Peyrefitte submitted by thecaptain on 15th Jan 2006. Large menhir near to the Dordogne river in the commune of St-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens in Gironde.
This is said to be the largest standing stone in southwest France, (but not the tallest) and it is 5.2 metres tall, 3 metres wide and less than a metre thick, with the bottom part of it chipped away to make the distinctive shape.

Sabatey Dolmen 1
Date Added: 11th Apr 2019
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen
Country: France (Aquitaine:Gironde (33))
Visited: Yes on 7th Apr 2019. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 3

Sabatey Dolmen 1 submitted by thecaptain on 9th Jan 2006. Remains of two dolmens near to the village of Bellefond in Gironde.
Sabatey dolmen 1 is in the woods, and the remains of the allée-couverte on top are much more recogniseable tan its neighbour.

Log Text: Important to approach this site from the Sabatey farm where the gate described by the captain can be found along with a sign. The road to the west may be closer to the site but access would be through a private wood with no paths.

Log Text: Finding this allee couverte was not very easy. Our sat nav stopped us by a field telling us that the tomb was due South of our position. We crossed to the far edge of the field where the ground rose steeply through a wood. I climbed with some difficulty through the wood as there were no discernable paths and then saw the tumulus which contains the allee couvert above me. It is a wonderful place. very atmospheric. After taking photographs I followed a slight path along the ridge and found that the site could be approached from the East via a farm track and a path through the wood. I guess that permission should be sought if this is the desired approach as there are many properte privee notices as one leaves the farm track. They are probably there only to deter Cep hunters.

Calhau de Teberno Dolmen submitted by thecaptain on 8th Feb 2006. This nice dolmen can be found in a little landscaped bit of parkland, sandwiched between the D.920 road and the railway line.
The dolmen has a lovely curvy capstone sitting on top of a chamber 4 metres long by 1,5 metres wide.

Lou Couraus Cromlechs submitted by thecaptain on 22nd Dec 2005. After a long wait, the clouds eventually rose a bit.
Then the cattle arrived, and I had this view south along the Ossau valley.
It was a wonderful moment.

Log Text: The rain had eased a little after our visit to the dolmen near Buzy so we decided to take the track up to these stone circles. What a magical place even with rain and poor visibility the hike was worth the trouble.
Pierre des Quatre Curés
Date Added: 16th Oct 2018
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: France (Auvergne:Puy-de-Dôme (63))
Visited: Yes on 15th Oct 2016
Pierre des Quatre Curés submitted by thecaptain on 21st Sep 2006. On the map this stone looks spectacularly positioned overlooking the Sancy mountains one way, and the valley of the river Dordogne the other.
In practice, it really only overlooks the fields around it, although there is a nice view of the Sancy Massif, the highest point of the Massif Central.
