Tathwell Long Barrow

Tathwell Long Barrow submitted by DavidRaven on 13th Jul 2006. Summer's breezes blow the barrow across a sea of barley... (I should be a poet, eh? :-D)
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The view from the road is very misleading as you can't see the barrow because the height is less than the surrounding scrub.

Baumber Cursus submitted by oldman on 29th Oct 2018. I hope that this is a view along the cursus with a slight rise at the far end of the field which is the terminal?

Revesby Barrows

Revesby Barrows submitted by Arjessa on 18th Apr 2016. Two Round Barrows on private farmland adjacent to the A155 at Revesby, Lincolnshire, can be viewed up close from verge but land in private. Map shows more round barrows to be amongst the trees and are not visible. These two Round Barrows appear to be connected by a low tunnel.

Butt Mound submitted by oldman on 29th Oct 2018. You can just make out a bit of the barrow under the brambles. Soon it will be only brambles that you can see.

Gray Hill circle

Gray Hill circle submitted by sem on 6th May 2013. Vandalism! The idiot who sprayed this hand-print probably thought he was being very clever and somehow "enhancing" the work of his ancestors. The sane and sensible among us will view it for what it is, graffiti. This has been reported to the relevant archaeo trust. Unfortunately I doubt the culprit will be found..... unless anyone knows of someone bragging on a social network site????

Log Text: Well I am not an archaeologist but isn't this a burial chamber? It is not the least bit circular but formed of two rows of stones down the sides with others at the ends.

Flagstaff Hill

Flagstaff Hill

Flagstaff Hill submitted by richbaber on 14th May 2015. Flagstaff Hill stone circle
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Well I really don't think that this is the remains of a stone circle. It is an interesting hillside with lots of lumps and bumps but it appears to be made up of old stone walls and green lanes. The 12 stones mentioned here are aligned and appear to run along a lane which if you walk to the boundary of the neighbouring property continues on the other side of the fence and has large stones running down its sides.

Old Vicarage

Old Vicarage submitted by oldman on 13th Dec 2018. There is another stone to the right of this picture but it is so covered in brambles I couldn't clear it
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Not That easy to find as the stones were covered in ivy and brambles. Managed to clear some of the ivy from some of the stones but would really need to go better equipped to clear away the brambles.

Heath Wood, Ingleby

Date Added: 15th Feb 2019
Site Type: Artificial Mound Country: England (Derbyshire)
Visited: Yes on 14th Feb 2019. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 4

Heath Wood, Ingleby

Heath Wood, Ingleby submitted by oldman on 15th Feb 2019. You can see where the earth was dug out to form the barrows in a few places.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This site in the Heath Wood is also known as the Danish Barrow Cemetery. A footpath leads down to the wood from the Ingleby Road. Not so easy to see the barrows as it is now a wood rather than the original grassy slope. Anyway it is a pleasant walk through the wood.

Anchor Church

Date Added: 15th Feb 2019
Site Type: Cave or Rock Shelter Country: England (Derbyshire)
Visited: Yes on 14th Feb 2019

Anchor Church

Anchor Church submitted by ESgt on 16th Oct 2011. Anchor Church, at the point where R.Trent turns eastward from flowing south.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Quite an adventure approaching the caves from the Ingleby side. Very narrow and tortuous path with possibility of falling into the Trent in many places. Worth the hike but my advice would be to approach from the other direction which is much easier (our return route). The footpath also leads to the Danish barrow cemetery if you want a longer walk.

Menhir des Goulards

Menhir des Goulards submitted by oldman on 21st Sep 2018. This is the side of the stone nearest the wood. Plenty of lines.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This is our second visit to this site. Earlier in the year this time and much less undergrowth so we were able to see a second Menir in the wood and some other large stones which perhaps are the site of a burial.

Curton Dolmen

Date Added: 11th Apr 2019
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: France (Aquitaine:Gironde (33))
Visited: Yes on 7th Apr 2019

Curton Dolmen

Curton Dolmen submitted by thecaptain on 10th Jan 2006. One capstone remains on the two rows of sidestones which can be traced for about 8 metres. Apparently 8 bodies were found within it when the chamber was excavated in 1904.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: It's a steep climb up to this dolmen but worth it. On our second visit to this site the sat nav brought us in from a different direction so there was no steep climb and we could take the car along a track almost up to the site. Also it was well signposted.

Sabatey Dolmen 1

Date Added: 11th Apr 2019
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: France (Aquitaine:Gironde (33))

Sabatey Dolmen 1

Sabatey Dolmen 1 submitted by thecaptain on 9th Jan 2006. Remains of two dolmens near to the village of Bellefond in Gironde. Sabatey dolmen 1 is in the woods, and the remains of the allée-couverte on top are much more recogniseable tan its neighbour.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Important to approach this site from the Sabatey farm where the gate described by the captain can be found along with a sign. The road to the west may be closer to the site but access would be through a private wood with no paths.

Great House Camp

Great House Camp

Great House Camp submitted by Andy B on 3rd Feb 2011. Hill fort topped with trees. Copyright Jonathan Billinger and licensed for reuse under the Creative Commons Licence
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: We thought at first that we would not be able to get to view the fort as there is no path indicated on the OS map and the Great House seems to be very private. However when we parked nearby we found that there is actually a marked (in Welsh) footpath which passes by two sides of the fort. There is a high hedge along most of the path but one access point into the area of the set of four ditches and mounds. The main area of the fort is not accessible and used for grazing cows. The rings are however quite impressive.

Cairn Catto

Date Added: 4th Jul 2019
Site Type: Cairn Country: Scotland (Aberdeenshire)
Visited: Yes on 29th Jun 2019. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3 Access 3

Cairn Catto

Cairn Catto submitted by oldman on 4th Jul 2019. This is the 3rd of 3 pictures taken from the left end to the right end of the cairn.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The cairn is in a field of cows surrounded by double barbed wire fences. It is only possible to get to the first fence and take pictures from there. At least half of the height of the cairn is hidden by gorse so it is only possible to see the stones forming the top of the cairn.
