Works Carn, Bryher

Date Added: 14th Mar 2011
Site Type: Chambered Cairn Country: England (Isles of Scilly)
Visited: Yes on 22nd Oct 2007

Works Carn, Bryher

Works Carn, Bryher submitted by paulcall on 22nd Oct 2007. This is a view of the chamber from above, from the promontary of Works Carn itself. It is quite difficult to get access this site owing to high growth of gorse, brambles and bracken. The circular kerb around the grave is almost complete, and can be seen particularly well on the right of the picture. Two of five capstones are still in place.

Samson Hill, Bryher

Date Added: 14th Mar 2011
Site Type: Chambered Tomb Country: England (Isles of Scilly)
Visited: Yes on 22nd Oct 2007

Samson Hill, Bryher

Samson Hill, Bryher submitted by paulcall on 22nd Oct 2007. This is the southern of the two kerbed platform cairns on the east side of Samson Hill (GPS SV8793414245). It is not as spectacular as the northern cairn, previously photographed and submitted by Thorgrim, as it is built into the natural promontary to a greater extent, and is therefore not as obvious. This photo shows the kerbstones on the centre-right and in the foreground, with a large natural rock centre-left.

Gweal Hill, Bryher

Gweal Hill, Bryher

Gweal Hill, Bryher submitted by paulcall on 22nd Oct 2007. This view looks south over the southwestern cairn of the three on Gweal Hill. The central cist can be seen centre-left, and there are two rings of kerbs both of which can just be seen on this photo, although the whole mound is now greatly weathered by its position on the most westernmost point of the inhabited islands on Scilly.

Inverewe

Inverewe submitted by paulcall on 30th Jun 2008. An attempt to show the crescent and V-rod markings of this Pictish stone superimposed over the stone itself. The dot markings are very difficult to pick out. Pictish stones are a rarity on the west coast.

Visited: Yes on 1st Sep 2008

Dolmen des Mouillières

Dolmen des Mouillières submitted by paulcall on 1st Sep 2008. A very ruined dolmen with no capstone now visible. Only the rear upright is standing, and there are two side uprights still visible, one of which is fallen and the other is toppling. It is approached uphill along a footpath from gravel tracks between St. Michel de Llotes and Bouleternere. It is approximately 500m from Les Rieres dolmen, which is in much better condition. Elevation 399m. GPS 42.64219 N, 2.61136 E.

La Cabane del Moro

La Cabane del Moro submitted by paulcall on 1st Sep 2008. I could not find this dolmen on a recent attempt, even though it is named on the IGN 1/25000 map just north of Llauro (but without the small dolmen symbol that is usually used). The closest I came was finding this sign, so it should have been nearby.

Moli del Vent submitted by paulcall on 1st Sep 2008. As Martyn has said, the capstone on this dolmen is a wonderful wedge shape, as viewed from both the west and south. This is taken from the west.

Alcalar Monument 7

Date Added: 14th Mar 2011
Site Type: Chambered Tomb Country: Portugal (Faro)
Visited: Yes on 1st Sep 2008

Alcalar monument 7

Alcalar monument 7 submitted by paulcall on 1st Sep 2008. A more recent view down the entrance passage than that previously submitted by David Morgan during reconstruction. The passage is now completely roofed over. I am not large, but the inner blocking stones are so close together that entry into the central chamber was impossible. This may have been a deliberate attempt to stop entry when the tomb was reconstructed.

Alcalar monument 9 submitted by paulcall on 1st Sep 2008. This is a general view of monument 9, under reconstruction in 2008. It appears to have a similar entrance to that of the already reconstructed monument 7, and it points in the same ESE direction

An Dun (Gairloch) submitted by paulcall on 1st Sep 2008. A panorama of the dun looking out over Loch Gairloch. The outline of the dun is just visible as a heavily overgrown circular elevation, about 15 yards in diameter, on the headland.

Menires de Milrei e do Padrão

Menires de Milrei e do Padrão submitted by paulcall on 1st Sep 2008. This menhir is the only one in the area of south-western Portugal which is, to my knowledge, upright, having been re-erected. It is also known as Menir de Padrao This stone is found south of Raposeira, by heading out of the village and turning right onto the first road, and driving about 500m.

Llech Y Dribedd submitted by paulcall on 4th Sep 2008. This is a fantastic capstone, balancing on three of four uprights, one of which has a nasty crack in it.

Porthmeor Circle

Porthmeor Circle submitted by paulcall on 6th Sep 2008. Taken in late July when the bracken seems to grow mainly within the boundary of the circle of stones. There are a lot of scattered stones downhill and I found that circle itself was pretty difficult to identify.
