Harreskov Hørgen

Harreskov Hørgen submitted by praeceptor on 11th Mar 2011. Site in København Denmark "Hørgen" is a protected relic in Great Hareskov A "Hørg" is a heap of stones or cairns, built by humans in antiquity. It has had a religious or cultic function, including the sacrifice of animals and symbolic use of animal blood and flesh by the related celebrations. Perhaps there is an astronomical element as well, since Hørgen is oriented so that each half year, at the equinoxes, the sun rises and sets in Hørgens longitudinal axis. Hørgen ...

Log Text: To get access to the dolmen you can either follow the fine dirtroad from the mainroad (Amtsvejen 16) until just before you'll enter the farm, then turn left and follow the separaration between the forrest and the field some 180 meter to the east, from where you can get access to another dirtroad and follow that some 60 back in direction of the farm, until it meet another dirtroad on the field. Follow that dirtroad some 400 meter to the south east, where you soon will be able to see the dolmen between the trees.

It's perfectly legal to go here, only remember that you are a guest on the farmes private land. So, please be polite!

Instead of walking the bit at the outskirt of the forrest, it'll also be perfectly legal to enter the farm and turn left after the first building on your left hand.

Log Text: Strange things happened at my visit in this wood. More often than not, I'm loosing something at my visits to these prehistoric burial sites. I use to think, that since I didn't bring any offerings the tombs simply takes something from me, but ever so often the lost items surfaces again. I don't know if this could be because the things we have today perhaps is worthless to ancient man.

During this visit I lost one of my gloves and gave up searching for it. At the end of the visit I decided to see what is situated at the coordinates this description points to. And believe it or not, but when visiting these coordinates I could see my lost glove some 10 meters away. Thanks to Maddy for providing the coordinates from where it several years later would be possible to spot an otherwise lost glove.

When I tried to operate the GPS at this spot, it simply locked up. This was a first, I never before have experienced the GPS to lock up. What should I think about it?

Log Text: It looks to me as if this big natural stone - 3 m width 2 m high - has many carvings on it, that unfortunately appears to be rather washed out. In a few spots there still is traces of red paint inside cupmarks, that gives me the impression that the Helleristninger in a recent time probably has been painted red in order for them to be visible to the ordinary visitors to this area.

If the carvings in the stone are bona fide carvings from prehistoric time it certainly could be great if this magnificent stone again could have its carvings painted by an expert in such matters.

Apparently this big stone - like so many other big stones - has been examined to test if it in fact is a stone or if it more sensationally and unlikely should turn out to be the tip of a Danish bedrock.

In order to test if it really is a stone they excavate one of the sides to check if the side eventually reach a point where it starts to slope inwards. When such a point is reached it has been scientifically established that it is in fact a stone.

In an official description this stone is called "Spejder-Stenen" (The Scout Stone) and allegedly it's the largest stone at Falster. The stone came here with the glacier some 15000 years ago. On the westside of the stone two small cupmarks are present. This is believed to have been of cult significance in the bronze age.

In my opinion there are more cult carvings on the stone than the two officially recognized cupmarks.

I found a photo of this stone on the internet, that shows how big it is in comparison with a boy: http://www.24.dk/image/3448373/450x540?.cached
