Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: Ireland (Republic of) (Co. Cork)
Visited: Would like to visit

Cloghboola Beg submitted by KenWilliams on 24th May 2006. A very odd and intriguing site, the round arrangement of stones in the background isn't the actual stone circle, its that strange structure in the foreground! This was possibly a five stone circle, the two portals are long slabs forming a passage like entrance. There are at least eight outlying stones including what once must have been a three stone alignment close to the radial circle.

Knocknakilla submitted by Johnny on 21st Jun 2002. Knocknakilla Megalithic Complex, Co. Cork (W297 841):
On the NW slopes of Musherabeg Mountain, Knocknakilla, the "stone of the church", is almost a twin to the megalithic complex at Kealkil (cf): both sites consist of a five-stone ring, a pair of standing stones and a radial cairn. Of the two pillar stones, one is now prostrate the other being the dominant feature in the complex standing 3.7m in height. The stones would originally have been just over 3.5m apart and aligned NNE-SSW....

The Gallarus Oratory submitted by swatson on 22nd Jul 2004. History Gallery
The enigmatic Gallarus Oratory on the Dingle Peninsula, Co. Kerry, Ireland. The date of it's construction is a matter for debate: some scholars put it around 600AD and others as late as 1200AD. Not pre-historic, but interesting.

Grange (Co. Limerick) submitted by KenWilliams on 19th Aug 2022. Ken Williams makes the first find of megalithic art in County Limerick at the wonderful Late Neolithic embanked stone circle at Grange, Lough Gur. Ken writes: I just dropped by when passing yesterday and discovered one or the stones has beautiful megalithic art, previously unrecorded.
The style and technique used seems most like passage tomb art c. 3,200-2,900BC, or a small number of carved stones with unusual designs that seem to fit somewhere between the Neolithic and Bronze Age.

Proleek Dolmen submitted by Sunny100 on 1st Sep 2010. The Proleek dolmen or burial chamber near Ballymacscanlan dates from the Neolithic period - some 5,000 years ago. The huge capstone measures approx 3.8 x 3.2 metres and is said to weigh somewhere between 30-40 tonnes. It is supported on only two up-rights each about 2.3 metres high. Local legend says the capstone was put into place by the Scottish giant Parrah MacShagean, who reputedly is buried nearby, hence the name 'The Giant's Load'. Pebbles are often thrown onto the capstone in the act of m...
