Dolmen de Pech-Lapeyre

Dolmen de Pech-Lapeyre submitted by greywether on 4th Jul 2005. This is a photo of a dolmen known in the Lot Inventory as Lac d'Auris. It was signposted from the centre of Limogne-en-Quercy but, I think, simply as "Dolmen". Anyway, the notable thing about Lac d'Auris is the thickness of the capstone - almost 1m and weighing 17 tons. Apparently there is a quarry 300m away with a hole the size of the capstone.

Coste-Rouge Dolmen

Coste-Rouge Dolmen submitted by thecaptain on 7th Oct 2005. Coste-Rouge Dolmen on a sunny, but cold and windy afternoon in September. Unfortunately, to see this dolmen nowadays, the full guided tour of the abbey has to be taken - there are no longer any open visits round the grounds because it has been made into an animal park. But its worth it.

Walnut Canyon Nat. Mon.

Walnut Canyon Nat. Mon. submitted by DrewParsons on 8th Nov 2008. Walnut Canyon - one of the many homes built under cliff overhangs by the Sinagua ("without water") people who first arrived in this area around 600CE. Prior to that the area had been visited by nomadic Archaic peoples. The Sinagua homes remained undisturbed until the 1880's railway brought souvenir hunters who looted artifacts destroying walls to gain access. The site was declared a National Monument and so protected in 1915.

Piketon Mounds submitted by aluta on 29th Aug 2010. A view of the large mound, surmounted by a modern standing stone, otherwise known as a grave marker. No doubt it was thought to be an honour among later European-descended arrivals to be buried on the highest of the Indian mounds.
