Grand Dolmen du Ferrussac

Grand Dolmen du Ferrussac submitted by stewart on 3rd May 2004. Isn't this a beauty? It has to be one of the most impressive dolmens I've seen - and I've been in a few in my time! There is a long creep passageway (5m long by 1m high) leading to a central chamber (3m by 2,5). The capstone is about 5m by 2,5m and 75cm thick.

Coste-Rouge Dolmen

Coste-Rouge Dolmen submitted by thecaptain on 7th Oct 2005. Coste-Rouge Dolmen on a sunny, but cold and windy afternoon in September. Unfortunately, to see this dolmen nowadays, the full guided tour of the abbey has to be taken - there are no longer any open visits round the grounds because it has been made into an animal park. But its worth it.

Dolmen de Pech-Lapeyre

Dolmen de Pech-Lapeyre submitted by greywether on 4th Jul 2005. This is a photo of a dolmen known in the Lot Inventory as Lac d'Auris. It was signposted from the centre of Limogne-en-Quercy but, I think, simply as "Dolmen". Anyway, the notable thing about Lac d'Auris is the thickness of the capstone - almost 1m and weighing 17 tons. Apparently there is a quarry 300m away with a hole the size of the capstone.

Dolmen de Axeitos submitted by ernar on 30th Sep 2004. The Dolmen de Axeitos is one of the most beautiful portal tombs in Galicia. In this case, the reforested eucaliptus shiled the site from the populated surroundings. Note to the editor: This picture should be linked with the 'Axeitos' Dolmen in Spain. Which in turn should be allocated to Galicia. Warm Regards Jorge aka Ernar

Log Text: Sadly this is the result of overzealous archeologists, historians and public officials. This magnificent dolmen has now been "preserved" -- truly entombed -- and has lost its function as a sacred site. The idea that a structure at least 5000 years old needs a huge wooden roof (that may last 100 years) to protect it is ridiculous. The objects found could be conserved in a museum and the site left in the state that has preserved it for the last 5000 years.

Pedra da Arca (Malpica)

Pedra da Arca (Malpica) submitted by Condros on 12th Nov 2003. In Galicia, Spain, there are some incredible references to this tomb. It lies close to an ancient pathway, and is reputed to be the tomb of "Orca Bella" the Galician equivalent of the Irish war goddesses the "Morrigan",Christian legends, depict her as a horrible demon like woman-who snares saintly men into her tomb, drawing the capstone over them, older faiths show her as a woman carrying a child in one hand and a huge capstone in the other, and being a loving and nurturing mother, responsible fo...
