Arbor Low 2

Arbor Low 2 submitted by PaulM on 1st Sep 2001. Arbor Low II Earthworks, Derbyshire GR: SK157633 A second possible henge site, known as Arbor Low II lies to the north-west of Gib Hill. Consisting of a curved ditch, some archaeologists believe it may be an unfinished henge, but others consider it is probably nothing more than a ditch created as a result of stone quarrying in the area.

Composed of weathered sandstone it resembles a huge mushroom or cork. As with the Andle Stone nearby it is covered in graffiti from the 19th and 20th centuries and has steps carved into the side to allow access to the top.

Here, the shadows from the low sun emphasise the trenching on the inside and outside of the near circular curb—a feature of the Heathcotes’ method of excavation, rather than of the cairn itself.

One Ash Shelter

One Ash Shelter submitted by NeanderthalGene on 19th Jul 2019. One Ash Shelter, Lathkill Dale. Extremely hard to find. From beneath the crag on the path in the bottom of the valley, cross the dry river bed and wall line. Head diagonally right to the RH end of the crag. Ascend past a hawthorn bush, then cut back left between the lower and upper crag lines. Take a faint path about 35m into the trees, the rock shelter appears directly above you. Still hard to see from below. Correct GPS coordinates: 53.18726, -1.74314

Log Text: Approached from the bottom of the hill, found previous instructions on how to find useful. Absolutely knackered when I found it. If the Mrs wasn't waiting at the bottom for me perhaps I'd have had time to catch my breath and peek my head further inside, but since I was in a rush I count just finding the place as catharsis enough.
