Avebury
Date Added: 26th Dec 2024
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Wiltshire)
Visited: Yes on 10th Nov 2024. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 5 Access 5

Avebury submitted by creators on 27th May 2005. I have been reluctant to submit this picture because it is a composite, taken on the same day in the same place but still a composite. It is AngieLake's exquisitely named 'receptors' hands receiving the moon and a picture I love.
So a composite done tenderly of Avebury that is at my very heart.

Date Added: 24th Jan 2025
Site Type: Museum
Country: England (Wiltshire)
Visited: Yes on 10th Nov 2024. My rating: Condition 5 Ambience 5 Access 5

Alexander Keiller Museum submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2008. The door to the Barn Gallery at Avebury. The barn is kept very cool in order to preserve the structure of the 17th century building, so it only houses a few archaeological exhibits - according to the NT leaflet it 'tells the story of the landscape through a fully interactive display'. Most of the archaeology collection is in the nearby Stables Gallery. Both are covered by the same admission ticket, unless you are a member of the National Trust (in which case both galleries are free).

Stonehenge. submitted by AlanButler on 26th Jun 2024. My Dec 2022 “False” illumination photo is used to illustrate Sarah Knapton’s 21 Dec 2023 on-line article “Winter solstice sunset was crucial Stonehenge date for ancient Britons, not famous sunrise, say experts. It demonstrates how, with “reverse-viewing” in the direction of midsummer sunrise, Stonehenge’s midwinter sunset alignment was communally witnessed as the final rays of the setting sun, channelled through The Great Trilithon, accurately illuminating the Heel Stone.

The Avenue submitted by TimPrevett on 10th Oct 2006. Looking NE along the last stretch of The Avenue. I've appended, albeit somewhat crudely, some lines to show the course of the outside of the parallel banks, and their *approximate* direction swinging off to the east. The tan line in the distance shows the line of some of the Cursus, which predates the Avenue considerably.
