Morfa Bychan
Date Added: 11th Jun 2012
Site Type: Chambered Cairn
Country: Wales (Carmarthenshire)
Visited: Yes on 21st Aug 2006

Morfa Bychan submitted by sem on 21st Aug 2006. Only the uprights remain from this chamber, but there are many candidates for the capstone lying nearby.
This site is very reminiscent of King's Quoit in nearby Manorbier with a line of stones, in this case natural, behind the chamber.

King Arthur's Cave
Date Added: 11th Jun 2012
Site Type: Cave or Rock Shelter
Country: England (Herefordshire)
Visited: Yes on 23rd Aug 2006

King Arthur's Cave submitted by sem on 23rd Aug 2006.
This cave was inhabited from the Upper Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age, a period of over 50,000 years. Finds here include bone, flint and "imported" pebbles. Caves nearby have also yielded Beaker and Roman pottery, but as this cave was also used to extract iron in the 18th and 19th centuries much archaeological evidence has been destroyed.

Bedd yr Afanc
Date Added: 11th Jun 2012
Site Type: Passage Grave
Country: Wales (Pembrokeshire)
Visited: Yes on 10th Sep 2006

Bedd yr Afanc submitted by sem on 10th Sep 2006.
My Welsh dictionary translates this as "Grave of the beaver," but I think I prefer water monster.
Supposedly difficult to find I had no problems. When you leave the road just head roughly South towards the most significant point on the horizon and the grave "emerges" from the ground in front of you.

Not one for the faint-hearted but the views are superb.

Carn Llechart Megalithic Complex
Date Added: 11th Jun 2012
Site Type: Modern Stone Circle etc
Country: Wales (West Glamorgan)
Visited: Yes on 10th Nov 2007

Carn Llechart Megalithic Complex submitted by sem on 10th Nov 2007. Site 1: View from Carn Llechart
Map ref SN69670627
Taken from the burial chamber at Carn Llechart, something can be seen in the centre of the picture just below the skyline. Was this a stone or maybe just a cattle feeder ? Even a pair of binoculars failed to decipher the puzzle.
Returning home, forays on the Internet showed nothing of archaeological value in this area and, until returning a few years later, I had no answer.

Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Yes on 13th Jan 2008

Nant Tarw WNW submitted by sem on 13th Jan 2008. Situated at SN80702467 this stone appears to be a Winter Solstice sunset marker. The circle is about 1ml away (to the right of the stream above my wife's white hat). Despite the distance it is perfectly visible from the circle.

Saith Maen SE
Date Added: 11th Jun 2012
Site Type: Stone Row / Alignment
Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Yes on 24th Mar 2008

Saith Maen SE submitted by sem on 24th Mar 2008. In between hail storms.
This is certainly one of the most unusual sites I've visited as the stones are set on a bare rock surface.
The walk there is a nightmare. Only just over a mile but across scree slopes, bogs and dense, tussocky grass.

Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: Wales (West Glamorgan)
Visited: Yes on 24th Apr 2008

Nicholaston Long Cairn submitted by sem on 24th Apr 2008. Unfortunately this tomb is on open heath used for grazing cattle, so the ground is covered in straw and cow***t.
Very little remains to be seen.

Site Type: Cairn
Country: Wales (West Glamorgan)
Visited: Yes on 24th Apr 2008

Llanmadoc Hill Great Cairn submitted by sem on 24th Apr 2008. The climb up Llanmadoc hill is hard going, but the view from the summit of the North Gower coast is amazing.
There are many other cairns up here but they are all but destroyed.

Carn Caca Cairn
Date Added: 11th Jun 2012
Site Type: Ring Cairn
Country: Wales (West Glamorgan)
Visited: Yes on 30th Apr 2008

Carn Caca Cairn submitted by sem on 30th Apr 2008. Caca cairn seems intact but is difficult to find (and photograph) in the vegetation. The "lumps" in the background are the result of medieval quarrying and the flat stone roughly marks the robbed cist.

Gournia

Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement
Country: Greece (Crete)
Visited: Yes on 9th Dec 2008

Gournia submitted by sem on 9th Dec 2008. Mooring Post
I found this placed on top of a pillar in the central courtyard. Judging by the way it has been eroded, I assume it was used to moor boats with and as there is no modern settlement nearby, I assume it is Minoan.

The Nipple
Date Added: 11th Jun 2012
Site Type: Cairn
Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Yes on 7th Jan 2009

The Nipple submitted by sem on 7th Jan 2009. From the photo you can see why we gave this cairn it's name.
Astoundingly, it is right next to a walkers path but is not shown on OS maps nor mentioned in the RCAHMW database.
That's the problem with archaeologists, they can't tell a nipple when they see one and they think cairns are just a pile of old stones.
