Long Meg And Her Daughters submitted by nicoladidsbury on 13th Jul 2005. Long Meg in midsummer moonlight. The solstice night is very short, but when you're waiting for the sun to rise, it gives plenty of opportuntiy to experiment with photos! I took this photo around 2am, in the middle of the solstice night. The moon was shining very brightly casting beautiful moonlight shadows, it felt very magical. I turned up my ISO rating to catch as much light as I could, and set the timer for 30 seconds. This is the result. I know its a grainy picture, and rather odd, but the b...

Log Text: On 22 December 2011 I made my usual visit to Stanton Drew for the winter solstice at sunset. There was me, my friend and a group of three guys... that was it.
It always amazes me how few people visit our great henges and circles for the winter solstice, despite all the evidence pointing to this being the most important connection. How come thousands go to Stonehenge in the summer when it’s so obvious that they should be there in the winter?
Stanton Drew has a lovely alignment through the great circle and the south west circle to the setting sun at the winter solstice, which was at 16.04 this year. Despite the cloud and rain it is still a wonderful place to be and experience the link with nature that the ancients felt.
The group of three had left by then… they’d obviously looked up sunset for the London meridian and not the one at Stanton Drew!
See you next year.
