Old King Barrows submitted by TimPrevett on 10th Oct 2006. Old King Barrows are a more sparsely grouped cluster than the New, and as typical of most of them, either closed in by, or topped by Beech Trees.

Menhirs le Vieux-Moulin (N) submitted by Ogham on 8th Jul 2012. The site is marked as menhirs but they are part of the alignment.

Log Text: There is a signpost "Vieux Moulin" off the D781 that is easy to miss. A dirt road leads a couple hundred meters past a house to a small hill. Park here. The menhirs are a very short easy walk east or south from there.

Vieux-Moulin Alignement

Vieux-Moulin Alignement submitted by aolson on 25th Jul 2020. As of July 2020, one of the stones seen leaning in earlier pictures has succumbed. The notice on the fencing basically states that the authorities are contemplating what to do next.

Log Text: I parked at the hill at Vieux Moulin Menhirs and walked on a path south maybe 200 m across a farm field to this site.

Crucuno dolmen submitted by thecaptain on 22nd Dec 2007. View of the southern side of this massive dolmen, showing clearly its proximity to the farmhouse. On the right are the last remaining capstone and pair of stones from the long entrance passageway.

Log Text: Still there and unfenced. Outside of the Carnac alignments this dolmen drew the biggest tourist crowds, even in the supposed off-season. Saw several tour buses pull in on a couple of visits a day apart. Solitude, if any, will be short lived.

Kerzerho Alignements

Kerzerho Alignements submitted by ermine on 1st Jul 2004. Kerzerho Alignments Brittany, Morbihan 47.634690N 3.148402W GPS onsite You can still walk among the stones at Kerzerho (in 2002 at east) which are near Carnac but not quite so busy. Head up the D781 to Erdeven. You can park nearby, and from there you can also take the path to the large stones of the Table du Sacrifice
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Entrance is normally via a dirt car park on the east side of D781, right next to a trail passing by the stones. However, the car park was closed off and dug up when I was there, presumably for some construction improvement work. There are a few limited pulloffs on the west side of D781 so I parked there instead.

The alignments straddle D781, with far fewer remaining on the west side of the highway than the east side. Access among the stones on the east side is still unrestricted. It is thought by some that the stones on the west side of D781 are what's left of a cromlech, now long gone

Géants de Kerzerho

Géants de Kerzerho submitted by Jimwithnoname on 26th Sep 2010. Site in Bretagne:Morbihan (56) France
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The Kerzerho Geants are located about 200 m north of the northernmost alignment row along a signposted easy footpath through a tunnel-like hedgerow. There are actually three separated groups of menhirs. The southernmost group is composed of somewhat shorter stones. The central group farther north represents the true giants, both upright and recumbent. The northernmost group comprises a mix of sizes and orientations and includes one very large upright stone where the path ends at a T junction.

This entire ensemble is oriented roughly north-south, 90 degrees offset from the east-west axis of the main Kerzerho alignments.

La Table du Sacrifice

La Table du Sacrifice submitted by LizH on 6th Nov 2007. In this picture, the furthest north stone (lying) can be seen. Behind it, however, at the back of the picture, this stone looks more as if it could be a 'table' and even possibly a 'sacrifice table' in the minds of those who named it. I am not sure which one is the official 'Table du sacrifice'.

Log Text: In the midst of the largest upright Geants are 2-3 huge, recumbent stones. It's anyone's guess which one qualifies for the Table du Sacrifice. But it's all good !

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I walked south across the D768 from the Mane Kerioned parking area along the Keriaval road (watch traffic !). Took the first left after the Master bowling center down a somewhat muddy lane which angles left past some obvious menhirs in a field. The passage grave is in a clearing about 50 m past that point.

Site is very clear of overgrowth and in good shape.

Ménec cromlech

Ménec cromlech submitted by AlexHunger on 20th Dec 2004. The Cromlec de Menec marks the westernmost extent of the Carnac Allignments. It basically starts on the road that separates it from the allignments, goes through a private garden, through the end of the village and ends in a creperie.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I parked in the main lot for the Maison Des Megalithes and walked west, taking a right at the roundabout onto a paved lane that leads north to a small village and the creperie. Within 100 m you will see the unmistakeable menhirs of the cromlech on both sides of the lane.

You can get nice glimpses of the cromlech running through private gardens by simply walking down the little village byways to the west. I did not walk on creperie property but spotted a pretty intact section in there from a distance.

Log Text: Access to this most famous of the Carnac alignments is so well documented that I won't rehash it here. I found that parking at the Maison des Megalithes lot and walking the fence line from the Menec Cromlech east and then looping back west was the best and easiest way to see it for those who can walk a fair distance. There are many other ways to do it, including organized tours and mini-trains.

Log Text: This is the starting point of megalithic discovery in Carnac for many. It's a visitor center with some exhibits, although the interpretation of the stone alignments themselves is not particularly detailed. The scale models of the Manio Tumulus and Kermario Dolmen are nicely done, The introductory video is also well executed and delivered in multiple languages. The book and gift store is definitely worth a look.

Log Text: This is a small extension of the easternmost Menec alignments, ending in a mostly ruined cromlech. Like Menec, they are fenced off in the summer months.

Although it's a lengthy hike from the Maison des Megalithes, I chose the shorter option of parking in a lot located just off of the D196, about 300 m east of its junction with the Carnac to Auray Road (D119). The alignments and cromlech are a short walk along the D119 fence line from there.

Cromlech du Menec-est submitted by postman on 29th Dec 2012. Very overshadowed by the multiple rows of stones the remains of this once large stone circle now partly inhabit some locals garden. jammy begger.

Log Text: It's a short walk west from the parking lot near the jct of the D119 and D196 (see visit log for Toulchignan Alignments for details). Like Toulchignan, the site is fenced off. I was (I think) able to make out some of the western stones of the cromlech. The stones are clearly closer together and oriented more north-south than the alignments.

View of the Kermario Dolmen which is right at the southwest corner of the Kermario Alignements, and right in the corner of the road which skirts the site. This picture was taken in 1987 when people were free to wander amongst the stones as they pleased. The terrible erosion caused by all the visitors is only too obvious.

Log Text: Park in the large public lot at the western end of the Kermario alignments. This is a good base to explore both the dolmen and the Kermario alignments.

Log Text: What can I say that hasn't already been said ? Astounding site and still one of many unsolved mysteries.

On a more mundane note, there are many ways to explore these alignments. For me, parking at the large lot near the Kermario Dolmen and walking the southern rows from there to the Old Windmill viewing tower and then back along the northernmost row provided the most satisfying on-the-ground experience. But be advised that it's a fair trek !

Rather eroded condition and age is unclear, but unmistakably a depiction of a crucifixion.

Log Text: An impressive menhir and one of the bigger ones in the Carnac area. However, the ground trampling and erosion is considerable due to foot traffic, and for that reason I deducted points for Ambience. Like the Quadrilatere 50 m away, this stone is surrounded by both a stone wall and low rope fence, both of which are apparently ignored by many despite some signs discouraging a closer approach in the interests of preservation.

I kept my distance and took a few photos. Perhaps I've been overly sensitized by the reality of certain vandalized and abused prehistoric sites in the U.S. and don't want to see a similar outcome here :-)

For parking and trail access, see my Visitor Log entry for the Quadrilatere de Manio.
