Menhir dit de Grésil

Trip No.204  Entry No.99  Date Added: 20th Jul 2020
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir) Country: France (Pays de la Loire:Maine-et-Loire 49)
Visited: Couldn't find on 16th Jul 2005

Log Text: There are three menhirs marked on my 1:100,000 map here in the region of the ring road to the south of the town of Montreuil-Bellay. I struggled to find any of them, so went to the local Super U to check out the 1:25,000 map. Turns out there are 4 menhirs to be found, and three castles, one of which blocks off most of the town to a camping car. This menhir is somewhere in a swamp by the river Thouet, between a major road junction and the river Thouet, with no chance of being able to find it.

Menhir des Verdons

Date Added: 29th Oct 2019
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir) Country: France (Rhone:Savoie (73))
Visited: Yes on 17th Feb 2011

Menhir des Verdons

Menhir des Verdons submitted by TheCaptain on 17th Feb 2011. Is this an ancient menhir which has been re-erected, or a more modern stone ? I don't know. I can find nothing out about it. But here it stands, proudly at the Verdons lift complex, in the middle of the Courchevel ski area. The stone itself stands about 2.5 metres tall, and certainly looks the part. I'm guessing a re-erection.

Log Text: This 3.5 metre tall triangular slab of rock is set upright in the forest at the top of the hill above Cumeray. Easily found along a forest track after a few hundred metres walk. Beware the vicious brambles surrounding it - they tore my shirt while trying to get a picture.

Menhir des Fichades

Menhir des Fichades submitted by theCaptain on 26th Jul 2011. The Menhir des Fichades stands in a field beside a wood, just above a little stream, and I suspect it was a natural rock which has been stood up, as there are many other rocks like this in the little valley above the stream.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: At the hamlet of Grand Bagnols, on the D.7 Road, take the little side lane to the south (best to park and walk). The Menhir des Fichades is signposted and only a couple of hundred metres from the road. It stands in a field beside a wood, just above a little stream, and I suspect it was a natural rock which has been stood up, as there are many other rocks like this in the little valley above the stream. It stands about 3 metres tall, and is nicely shaped with a curved top.

Menhir des Droits de l'Homme

Menhir des Droits de l'Homme submitted by thecaptain on 19th Dec 2006. This large menhir was erected here and inscribed in 1840 to commemorate the shipwreck of the "Droits de l'Homme" in 1797 with the loss of around 600 lives. The stone is a real menhir moved here from elsewhere. It's next to a car park besides this phenomenal beach, with the surf pounding in all around, creating its own fog !

Menhir des Demoiselles (Colombiers-sur-Seulles)

Menhir des Demoiselles (Colombiers-sur-Seulles) submitted by thecaptain on 28th Apr 2005. Just over 2 metres in height, this menhir is set in its own little grassy area beside the road junction just uphill to the east of the village. It is a square pillar with several holes and indentations, and has been broken in the past at both top and bottom (probably during the war) and is now remounted on a concrete post. Menhir de Villars

Menhir de Villars submitted by ocdolmen on 20th Sep 2009. Site in Auvergne: Puy-de-Dôme (63) France: Villars menhir
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This little menhir, less than 2 metres tall, can be found in the hamlet of Villars, near to the lavoir in the village square. On the top of the menhir is mounted a curious cross with a carving of Christ on it. Again, I missed this only because I did not know of it. There were once three menhirs to be found in the commune of Orcines.

Menhir de Soulor

Trip No.205  Entry No.60  Date Added: 25th Oct 2020
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir) Country: France (Midi:Hautes-Pyrénées (65))
Visited: Couldn't find on 7th Sep 2005

Log Text: There is a stone at the top of the Col de Soulor, now used as a signpost and footpath marker, but I doubt it is the menhir. Nothing else obvious was seen while I was up here, but the Col was in the clouds and the visibility was severely lacking.

At a later point in time, I found out that apparently the stone is down the road to the left (North) of the Col.

Log Text: Near the entry to the Planàs Dolmen, and laying on the tumulus, is a lovely fallen menhir, which possibly acted as a marker. Its about 2 metres long and 1 metre wide, and a lovely almond shaped stone. Pity it hasn’t been stood up when the dolmen restoration was done.

This menhir is found in a field just to the north of the village beside a little stream, and is probably more than 2 metres tall. Men Bihan

Men Bihan submitted by TheCaptain on 12th Aug 2007. Men Bihan, the "little stone", is about 1.8 metres tall, and a nice white granite all covered in moss. It is well hidden deep in the forest.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The "little stone" is well hidden deep in the forest. I found it as much by luck as by good navigation using a detailed map and asking people. There are no signs or anything to help you, and it is 100 metres away from the nearest footpath. The menhir is about 1.8 metres tall, and a nice white granite all covered in moss. Its a nice stone to find, partially because of the difficulty in getting to it, with no gps or anything to go by.

Menhir de Landre 1 submitted by thecaptain on 1st Aug 2008. This menhir stands up on top of its little hillock, about 70 metres to the side of the road.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: From the Planas junction, take the small road towards Le Landre. After a couple of kilometres, just after passing over the brow of a hill, and you can see this menhir up on top of its little hillock, about 70 metres to the left of the road. It was all well fenced in when I visited, behind a little cropped field, so I couldn't get to the stone. It looks about 2.5 metres tall, and leans at quite an angle. Splendid views from here to the north, and the Cevennes.

Log Text: Walking down the ridge in a small gap in the storms, I found two more menhirs before having to give up and return. The second menhir along the ridgetop track is also about 2 metres tall, and about 150 metres from the road.
