Log Text: The remains of this monument can be found at the eastern end of the Kerlescan alignements, around the back to the north, and in a wood. It is about 60 metres long by 8 metres wide tumulus, completely surrounded by a stone peristalith. Inside this mound is a 16 metre long lateral entrance allee couverte type structure, but unfortunately with only one remaining capstone at the western end. Its entry is from the southern side near the east end. The mound is rectangular in shape at the western end, and curved at the east, and is still 2 or 3 metres high.

Kerloas menhir

Kerloas menhir submitted by thecaptain on 23rd Jun 2006. Kerloas menhir noticeboard. Unfortunately theres lots of writing, so it comes out very small !

Log Text: What a fantastic stone, and easily found near to the old D.5 road to the east of Plouarzel due to many signposts to it. This is the biggest standing menhir in Europe, if not the world, at nearly 10 metres tall, and has lost the top 2 metres after a lightning strike! It towers above all around, and standing as it does on top of a hill, it can be seen from 30 kilometres away.

The stone, which is not local and has been brought to this hilltop site from more than 2.5 kilometres away near the Aber Ildut estuary, has been beautifully shaped, and tapers both into the ground, and up to a point. On the two "thin" sides of the stone are round humps, about 20 cm in diameter about belly high above the ground.

This stone of course has many legends, such as treasure buried beneath it, going to drink at the ocean on the strike of 12:00 on Christmas night, and that newly wed couples should come here on their wedding night to rub the stone lumps for a good future and fertility. In fact, many wedding parties still come here to this day in order to perform this ritual.

It was a pity it was cold and late when I visited, and not good light for photographs. I feel I would like to stay here a while, it has a lovely atmosphere. Maybe I will come back tomorrow.

Log Text: This is a simple chambered dolmen which has been incorporated into the end of a wall behind a farm in the hamlet of Kerlud. The single large capstone sits on top of several support stones around a 3.5 by 2.5 metre chamber, with dry stone walling filling the gaps between the slabs. The entrance is to the east, and there are traces of a mound.

Kerluir dolmen

Kerluir dolmen submitted by TheCaptain on 19th Feb 2011. Theres a big mound here on top of a hillock, to the east of the Kerluir menhir, but its all covered with gorse and blackthorn. However, there is a way through, and somewhere in the middle can be found this tiny little dolmen, which consists of a capstone sitting on two sidestones, with a few other stones in the vicinity. It wouldn't surprise me if this wasn't just a set of stones from an entry corridor, and that there is, or was, something much bigger lurking in the thick undergrowth !

Kerluir menhir

Kerluir menhir submitted by TheCaptain on 19th Feb 2011. This is a nicely shaped 4 metre high menhir in the middle of a field about 800 metres to the south of the Kermario alignements, and as such, the poor thing is a bit overshadowed.

Log Text: This is a nicely shaped 4 metre high menhir in the middle of a field about 800 metres to the south of the Kermario alignements, and as such, the poor thing is a bit overshadowed. But I was taken with its leaning and its pointy top, and liked it a lot. To find this go down the track to the south of the Kermario dolmen, and then you will find it across the field a bit further to the south at the corner.

Log Text: This is a nice little dolmen sitting in a little mound in some fields just round the back of the houses, and a hundred or so metres walk. It's got a 3m by 2.5m chamber, partially made with slabs, partly with drystone walling. It is fully covered by its capstone, and there is no sign of an entrance corridor. This dolmen seems to be kept nicely clear of all undergrowth.

Log Text: This 5.2 metre tall menhir, which was re-erected in 1988, stands in a pleasant little grassy area with an information sign. The stone is flat on one side, rounded on the other, and has been shaped to a point at the top. There are carvings on the stone, many small cupules, and near the base of the flat side, a very clear square with a crescent shape protruding from one corner, which reminded me of a saucepan.

Kermané dolmen

Kermané dolmen submitted by thecaptain on 13th Sep 2008. Kermané dolmen. Following from the recent photos of minteddy and Ogneslav, I thought I'd send a picture of it as I found it all overgrown in June 2005.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: To the southwest of the Chat Noir roundabout is the hamlet of Kerangoff, where there can be found a dolmen and a menhir. The dolmen is easy to find, right beside the track amongst the houses, but is very overgrown. It has a large 4 metre by 3 metre chamber with the capstone supported on 8 sidestones, and an iron bar.

Kermario Alignements

Kermario Alignements submitted by thecaptain on 18th Oct 2004. Kermario Alignements, north of Carnac, Brittany. View of some of the enormous stones which go to make up part of the Kermario Alignements. This picture was taken in 1987 when people were free to wander amongst the stones as they pleased. The terrible erosion caused by all the visitors is only to obvious.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I am not going to say much about the major Carnac alignements, except to say that they are all absolutely mind blowing. Even though I saw them all those years ago, the first sight of all those stones lined up is incredible, especially in the strong evening sunshine.

I cannot possibly do justice to these stones with my writing or photographs. I will say that the fences surrounding the stones are not obtrusive, unlike the fences at stonehenge, and with the vegetation returning, they all look FAR, FAR better than they did in 1987 with all the soil erosion around them all. I must come back and do the full tour at some time.

Kermarquer dolmen

Kermarquer dolmen submitted by TheCaptain on 8th Nov 2007. This dolmen is much easier to find than its neighbour Mané Bras, but still involves 100 metres of fighting a way through gorse and bramble filled woodland.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This one is much easier to find than its neighbour, but still involves 100 metres of fighting a way through gorse and bramble filled woodland. The monument is a strange one, with two chambers off of a single entry corridor. The main chamber, a rectangular 2.5 metres by 2.5 metres has no capstone, and leads straight off of the corridor. The second chamber is off to the side of this, with its entry at the side of chamber 1, and is about 1.5 m by 1.5 m, and is covered by a capstone. The corridor has two large capstones still in place. This monument is still mostly contained within its mound, and all very overgrown, making photographs very difficult.

Kermarquer menhir

Kermarquer menhir submitted by TheCaptain on 18th May 2011. This superb menhir can be found in a little woodland clearing. It must be getting on for 7 metres tall (6.8m), and it has been mostly shaped and smoothed.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This superb menhir can be found in a little woodland clearing, not far from the roadside to the southwest of Moustoir-Ac. It is signposted, and there is a little parking area.

The menhir, which is slightly leaning, must be getting on for 7 metres tall, and it has been mostly shaped and smoothed, although one face is fairly rough and has probably had bits fall off over the millennia. Not only has the menhir been shaped and smoothed, but there are also carvings on it, which are quite difficult to make out in the strong mid afternoon sunlight, but at other times may be quite clear. I counted at least four crook shapes on the stone, two on the southwest side, one on the southeast face and one on the north east side, but there are probably more. These carvings are not engravings, but are in relief, and they face in both directions.

Log Text: This is the remains of a little dolmen at the roadside to the southwest of Moustoir-Ac. There is a single capstone, approximately round with diameter 2.5 metres, sitting on top of four or five uprights. There are a few more stones around the area. It is possible that this is the end of an allée couverte which has been wrecked by the road being built through it.

Kernédiec allée couverte

Kernédiec allée couverte submitted by richardhtc on 5th Sep 2006. Kernédiec allée couverte, Commune of Riec sur Belon, August 2006
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Kernédiec allée couverte is of the arc boutée type construction, and it is one of only eight of this type known. This is where one row of side stones leans up against the other and there are no capstones, rather than the more normal two rows of uprights and horizontal capstones. The chamber is about eight metres in length, and faces eastwards at 085°. The six stones on the northern side are set fairly vertically, while the seven on the southern side lean on to them.

This type of construction saves on stones, but makes a much smaller space inside the chamber. This monument is to be found in a little picnic area besides the road a few kilometres to the south of the village of Riec-sur-Belon, but its a fairly tortuous drive to get to it !

Splendidly positioned beside the sea near to the Pointe de Kerpenhir, this 3.5 metres tall menhir can be seen in the far hedge of a field, overlooking the entrance to the gulf of Morbihan, with all its boats racing in and out. What a superb position this would be if the hedge were not there !

Kerprigent alignement de menhirs

Kerprigent alignement de menhirs submitted by theCaptain on 11th Jul 2014. In the woodlands to the northeast of Kerprigent Manoir, can be seen a quartz standing stone, just short of three metres tall. Wander into this delightful ancient woodland, and it is soon seen that the quartz menhir is not alone, being surrounded by a large number of other quartz stones.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: After the disappointment of Barnenez being closed we still have quite a drive to the hotel in Ploumenach, so although no time for any out of the way stone visits, but should be able to fit a couple of quick visits in if not too far out of the way. A good look at the maps suggests a couple of places, the first of which seemed to be an old chapel despite its dolmen sign on the map, and this the second which looked easy enough to find, and indeed was.

In the grounds of Kerprigent Manoir, not far from the side of a small road through the woodlands to the northeast of the Manoir can be seen a quartz standing stone, just short of three metres tall. Find somewhere to park and wander into this delightful ancient woodland, and it is soon seen that the quartz menhir is not alone, being surrounded by a large number of other quartz stones. It initially looked as if these stones were in several lines, but to be honest they could be randomly positioned, and lines are always going to appear. The main menhir was probably once much larger, as it looked as if the many surrounding stones were probably broken from its top.

On this hot April afternoon, it was lovely to be in the calm and shade amongst these ancient trees, just about to spring into life, and with masses of birdsong all around. As is the normal case, these quartz stones seem to keep very cool. A lovely place to spend some time.

Kerran dolmens

Kerran dolmens submitted by TheCaptain on 15th Jun 2011. Remains of two dolmens a couloir near the intersection of the D28 with the D781 to the south of Crac'h, one in better condition than the other.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: From the busy Chat Noir roundabout to the south of Crac'h, take a small lane to the southeast, a few hundred metres along which you find a little clearing to the right of the lane within which this tomb resides. I was not quite sure what to make of it, there are two obvious chambers, both still with capstones, but there looks to be more. I think it was probably two dolmens with entrance corridors, probably both once contained within a single mound.

The first, western chamber, has a 3 metre by 3 metre capstone on a chamber twice the size, possibly seperated into two by an internal stone. The eastern chamber is 3 m by 2 m and has an end stone, with a probable entrance to the south. As with most of the lesser known monuments around here, it is all becoming very overgrown with gorse and brambles, which is a real shame.

There was once a third dolmen here, which was bought and then completely removed in order to make a family tomb of the Archéologist Jean-Baptiste Piketty (1827-1884) in the cemetary at Meudon.

There is one more bit of large stone here, which may be a support, or may be a broken bit of capstone. It would seem that the rest of the stones from this dolmen have been used to build the wall around the house opposite, a strange large gatewayed studio. But perhaps there was once some sort of cromlech here.
