Log Text: This is a massive slab of rock deep in the forest, found by following a trackway which now has a private sign on it, but I went for a look anyhow. I would think it is a natural slab of granite with its dimensions 10 metres by up to 5 metres, but it would appear to have been used as a capstone to a burial chamber under the eastern end, which has been dug underneath and surrounded with a couple more slabs. Whatever it is, this is a nice place to find.

Dolmen de Men-Gouarec

Dolmen de Men-Gouarec submitted by Ogham on 8th Jul 2011. Passage grave at Mein Gouarec, it is well sign posed and the farmer has ensured it is accessable even when crops are growing
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This allée couverte with carved breasts on the back stone is signposted from miles around, and with its own little parking place and signpost. However, when I visited, I was not able to reach it as the farmer has a crop of sweetcorn growing all around it and there was absolutely no way through. this is not supposedly allowed, a pathway should have been kept clear, but what can I do about it ?

Log Text: Marked on my map as not far from the roadside near to a junction, I thought that this would be an easy menhir to visit. However, the woodland is very thick and filled with bracken, and I could not get to see it.

Kergonfalz allée couverte

Kergonfalz allée couverte

Kergonfalz allée couverte submitted by stollentroll on 14th Dec 2005. Allée couverte Kergonfalz
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Just to the west of Bigan, and signposted from there, can be found the remains of this allée couverte right at a road junction. The allée is 9 metres long and oriented to the south, at a bearing of 185°. At the north end there is a closing slab and a little ante chamber behind that. One stone has been lost to the road. Three capstones are still in place, although fallen within the passage. It has been dated to about 2700-3000 BC.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: To the west of Bigan, and signposted from there, can be found this dolmen almost completely still within its large mound, just over the road from the easily found allée couverte. The mound must be about 25 metres in diameter, and up to 5 metres high within woodland. The rectangular chamber is about 3 metres by 2 metres, and covered by a single capstone. The entry passageway to the chamber, although now completely fallen and dug into, comes off the chamber and exits to the outside at the east after turning through almost a right angle, a bit like a small version of the Bono tumulus.

Log Text: Easily found a few kilometres south of Trédion just to the west of the D.1 road to Elven, this nice site is signposted and has a parking place from where it’s a couple of hundred metres walk up into the lovely woodland on the ridgetop. I thought it to be a strange monument, which looks in some ways to be an Arc Boutté type allée couverte with a V dolmen built on top of it!

The passageway is about 9 metres long and faces 120°, with its paired stones leaning against each other. At the west end is a large capstone, 4 m by 3 m, sitting on top of extra support stones making a sort of chamber 2,5 metres wide, but it is filled up with the leaning stones of the passage. Its almost as if there is a complete V form dolmen built on top of the allée couverte using the same entrance, as there are extra rows of stones outside the passageway. Perhaps the allée couverte was built within the V dolmen. Around the outside are several other shaped stones, no doubt a peristalith of the original mound, of which much remains.

This is a lovely little place to sit in the shade on a hot day, and well worth a visit.

Allée Couverte de Men Braz

Visited: Yes on 13th Jul 2005. My rating: Condition 1 Ambience 4 Access 4

Log Text: In the vicinity of the Men-Braz are many other stones, which I am lead to believe are the remains of a much wrecked dolmen.

L'Etoile allée couverte

Log Text: After all the time spent looking for the previous stones, I thought that I'd best not go on another long walk through the forest to try and find this one. My notes and books say that it is difficult to find, so I left it alone.

L'Armoirie menhir

L'Armoirie menhir submitted by Ogham on 20th Jan 2012. Site in Bretagne:Morbihan (56) France
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I could not find the forest track which leads to this menhir, again there are no signposts obvious, and this stone is not even marked on the ign 1:25000 map, so I didn’t spend long looking.

Supposedly it’s a 1.5 metre tall menhir that has been broken, standing to the southwest of the alignement, between the D.779 and L'Armorie crossroads. So the menhir would be less imposing than most of the stones in the alignement.

Champ Dolent menhir

Champ Dolent menhir submitted by thecaptain on 6th Jul 2005. Champ Dolent menhir. At more than 9 metres tall, its a bigg 'un.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This is a glorious 9 metre tall shaped and sculpted granite menhir, the stone for which has been brought here from over 4 kilometres away. It stands high on a little hillock overlooking the ancient city of Dol, with the rock which has been inhabited for many thousands of years just beyond that. At its base is another small and polished stone, the origins of which are unknown.

Looking carefully at parts of the stone in the shadow, and it wouldn't surprise me if there are carvings on it. Having seen St Samson, it seems possible to make out various crosses and lines and daggers. Or is this just me seeing things now ?

This is of course another stone surrounded by legends and folklore. It is said to be here to commemorate a great battle perhaps. It is also said that it was thrown down from the sky by an over seeing being in order to separate two fighting brothers. Whatever, it is a most wonderful stone. Come and see it for yourselves.

Château Bû

Château Bû

Château Bû submitted by thecaptain on 22nd Nov 2005. Château Bû, part of the St Just megalithic wonderworld. A chambered tumulus with a stone circle on the top and also 3 or 4 large white menhirs. Most strange. Like nothing I have seen before at all. Sort of like three or four monuments in one all on top of each other.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This is now fenced off to prevent the massive erosion which was happening but clearly visible although becoming a little overgrown. Just what the heck is it ? A chambered tumulus with entrance to the east but with a stone circle on the top and also 3 or more large white menhirs. Most strange. Like nothing I have seen before at all. Sort of like three or four monuments in one all on top of each other.

Croix St Pierre east

Croix St Pierre east

Croix St Pierre east submitted by thecaptain on 23rd Nov 2005. Croix St Pierre north and south dolmens can be seen in the background of this picture amongst the long grass, with in the foreground the simpler and smaller burial chamber. I think these three structures were once in a single long mound, but I may be wrong, and perhaps they were once in seperate individual round mounds.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: A large long mound with two large dolmenic chambers within it opening to the side and also a smaller one near one end. This has been excavated and restored in 1990/91 and was dated to 3500 to 4000 BC. As with all of these chambers it is fenced off to keep the masses out.

Le Four Sarrazin

Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: France (Bretagne:Ille-et-Vilaine (35))

Le Four Sarrazin

Le Four Sarrazin submitted by thecaptain on 23rd Nov 2005. Le Four Sarrazin is a lateral entry allée couverte near the western end of the St Just complex. Some of the capstones have cupules, a few of which can be seen in the near stone here, but there is a much better arrangement underneath.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: A little ruined allée couverte in a mound at the western end of the Saint Just megalithic wonderland almost overlooking the gorge down to the river. The chamber is aligned roughly east west on 109° with the entrance being near the east end on the southern side. There are three remaining fallen capstones one of which has a fine pattern of cupules in its underside. It has been dated to 2500 BC.

Demoiselles de Langon

Demoiselles de Langon submitted by thecaptain on 17th Nov 2005. Les Demoiselles de Langon. Near to the stadium in the village of Langon, these alignements consist of between 30 and 40 white quartz stone blocks in a field.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Found near to the stadium in the village of Langon and signposted from the main street These alignements consist of between 30 and 40 white quartz stone blocks in a field. Though I have read somewhere about them being arranged in two rows this most definitely isn’t the case. I have also read about them being astronomically aligned but to me they seem quite randomly scattered about! Many intersecting lines of 4 or 5 stones perhaps but nothing obvious. It would be nice to see a plan of this place to see if I could make more sense of the stones. There are probably many more stones that have been removed or are hiding in people’s gardens or under hedges.
