Log Text: The track up to this from the road between Tredion and Ervan was gated and with a keep out sign. I hoped I would be able to perhaps get to this later from the other side in the forest, but there was no such luck.

Log Text: Trehiguier menhir, or Pierre Blanche, is a large white quartz block found down Allée de Megalithe, and at the left just before the end of the road at a boatyard, or fish factory. It is about 2.5 metres high, and 1.5 metres square at the base.
About 10 metres away is a large grey slab with some holes, and many other stones. I dont know whether these other stones are the remains of anything ancient or not. It looks to me like it could be two fallen menhirs, or else a menhir and a tomb of some kind.

Log Text: This is a massive lump of white quartz, more than 4 metres tall and 3 metres wide, in a vineyard up on the hills overlooking the beautiful Loire river, to the north of Oudon. As seems to be the case with this quartz, it keeps lovely and cool on a scorching hot day, and is nice and sparkly.

Log Text: They really don’t want people looking at their megaliths around here. There are no signs, nowhere to stop, and everything overgrown and behind double barbed wire fences, with hedges and brambles growing in between them. The menhir can be seen from the roadside across the far side of a field, but there seems to be no way to get near it.

Log Text: This stone is easy to find, driving west along the D.112 towards Sanilhac, and after a couple of kilometres there it is, standing right beside the road at a corner. La Pierre au Diable submitted by davidmorgan on 26th Aug 2010. A four metre tall granite menhir situated among groups of stones which may well be a ruined allée couverte and a dolmen, by the looks of them - difficult to tell since they are covered with undergrowth and trees.

Log Text: This dolmen is a complete wreck, and can be found beside the D.134 road south of Charnac. It has had a little area of field left unplanted around it, but there's not much to see. There is just what seems to be a broken capstone and a few other bits and pieces laying about. I have since found out that this dolmen was destroyed as recently as 1978,

Log Text: This is now not much more than a line of a dozen or so slabs positoned in a line of about 10 metres length, and is probably the remains of an allée couverte. Several of the slabs are marked with cupules and symbols.

Log Text: There are several dolmens marked along a ridgetop to the west of the village of Fontenille, so I went for a look. The whole area abounds with tumulus and mounds perched on the hilltops. The map may have only 4 or 5 marked, but there are many more here. As I was parking to go walking along the ridgetop track signposted "Dolmens", A white van parked nearby, and out got a little old man, wondering if I was looking for the dolmens. When I said yes, and he realised I was keen, he went back to his van and got a folder out containing lots of pictures. He told me he was an archaeologist, and collected flints etc. He has thousands, all photographed and catalogued. Flint tools, axes, arrowheads, polished stone tools, some polissoir stones, some copper arrowheads, some pottery, a female goddess icon, through Roman coins and other remains, reight up to a royal seal from the time of Napoleon, all found round here. He was obviously very proud of his collection, and was interested that I was here and perhaps writing a book for the English. It was a pity I couldnt make myself fully understood to him, or him to me, but he was an excellent find ! We agreed that there were many many tomb remains round here, everywhere you looked you could see something, must be well into double figures without even trying.
Remains of a nice dolmen splendidly positioned on top of a ridge, with many other dolmens and tumuli in the vicinity, a couple of kilometres to the southwest of the village of Fontenille in Charente. Walking southwest from the D.61 along the ridgetop trackway signposted "Dolmens", and after about 800 metres you get to the remains of La Petite Pérotte dolmen. A massive capstone, 4 metres long by 2.5m wide and 1.5 metres thick is sitting on top of several smaller support stones, which have been very well shaped into blocks to make a very regularly formed square chamber below. Just to the southeast is another smaller capstone, under which is what seems to be another little chamber. Perhaps this was once part of the entranceway to the chamber proper. It's all still on top of a small mound which has several large stones surrounding it.

Log Text: In a field of barley, just to the south of the D.82 road to the northwest of Commequiers village, can be found this menhir. However, as is often the case, there is a way through to it by following through some tracks made by the tractor wheels. It is about 2.5 metres high, 2 metres wide and has one or two strange shapes in the grey stone.

La Moustoir stèle submitted by TheCaptain on 5th May 2011. Just round the southwest side of the little chapel at Moustoir can be found this nice granite stele. Its about 2.3 metres tall and nicely shaped, with a flat face facing to the southeast. Onto this face has been carved a cross.

Log Text: To the northeast of the village of Tripleville, the Mouïse-Martin dolmen can be found in a field of tall sweetcorn just to the east of the little lane leading up to Mouïse-Martin farm. Its about 80 metres from the road, and the capstone can be seen covered in grass high above the sweetcorn, so it's either sitting on some good support stones, or on a fairly big mound. The capstone looks to be roundish, about 3 metres in diameter, and fairly thick.
As I was writing this, a farmer drives by in his tractor, and stopped for a chat with me. He told me that if I wanted to walk to the dolmen it would be OK. I couldn't quite see how I was going to be able to do this without either pushing through all the maize, or I would have to go to the far end of the field and then a long walk between the rows. Time was getting on, so I decline his kind offer. What a nice attitude most of the farmers and landowners in France seem to have.

I thought I'd found a massive tumulus in about the right place in amongst some trees, but a closer inspection didn’t show there to be an obvious tumulus there. It was getting late, so i didnt look too much harder, as its time to stop for the day.

Log Text: Marked on my ign map near to the village of Ymeray is the Dolmen de Chantecoq. I had a good look around, but could find no obvious signs to a dolmen of any kind, but there was a trackway called "Sentier des Roches" which I found near to the railway bridge, so I went for a walk up there. After several hundred metres was a little area being turned into a little public parkland, with picnic tables etc. Here there is a big natural outcropping of rocks, which may have been used for dolmen making. There is lots of it, and it makes very good slabs, and in many ways reminds me of the rock outcrops / quarries at Tinkinswood. A bit further up the track, in a private orchard, is what I assume is a menhir, at least there is a 2.5 metre tall slab of rock standing upright. But without any more information, it was difficult to know exactly what there is here.

Extrait of Pierres-Garatelles (covered rocky), the menhir of Meinge of the Devil is the only preserved megalith raised on Vairé's territory. If one believes the legend of it, this menhir was of use formerly of purpose to Satan and to an angel who played the meinge (sort of game of palet). The angel was so skillful as his palet (a big flat stone) lands right by the menhir. It was not there the same for Satan who sent the cliff to the middle road of the target. In fury...

Log Text: I found a signpost to this one, but despite walking along every track and footpath in the vicinity, I found no semblance of any menhir. I wish that when there are signposts from the road, they are followed up later. I must have walked many miles in the baking hot sun here. At least it should be doing me good.

Log Text: This is a lovely little allée couverte, deep inside a lovely oak forest just to the east of the village of Tressé, and signposted from there. There is a parking area, and a signposted and guided walk footpath from there to find it, along with many other items of interest.
The allée is about 12 metres long, at an orientation of 155°, but it is not much more than a metre wide or high. Truly a house for the fairies. All but the end capstone are still in place, and at the back end there is a nice little additional cell. Within this cell are some exceptional carvings on the southern sidestone, of two pairs of breasts with their collars, on a cartouche giving them a big relief. There are also the remains of two pairs on the chevet stone, but these have been crudely hacked off in the past, leaving just the outlines.
Of course, there are many legends of the fairies who live here in this forest, including the story of a farmer who was given some everlasting bread by the fairies because their cow had become ill, and the farmer had helped them with it. The bread would stay fresh and last forever so long as he never told the story. Of course, one day the farmer did tell the story, and the loaf of bread turned to stone - a stone which can still be seen here today.
