Sheldon (Aberdeenshire)
Date Added: 29th Oct 2019
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: Scotland (Aberdeenshire)
Visited: Yes on 27th Jul 2017
Sheldon (Aberdeenshire) submitted by TheCaptain on 27th Jul 2017. Despite having seen nice pictures of this stone circle, it was a big let down. To get to it meant a longish walk through firstly a manure dump, and after that a field full of growing root vegetables, meaning a wet detour along the tractor tramlines to get to the top of the hill.

Broomend of Crichie Avenue
Date Added: 29th Oct 2019
Site Type: Multiple Stone Rows / Avenue
Country: Scotland (Aberdeenshire)
Visited: Yes on 27th Jul 2017
Broomend of Crichie Avenue submitted by TheCaptain on 27th Jul 2017. Just a couple of stones remain of this 500m long stone avenue, which once lead away to the south from the henge, and also northwards from the henge to the now destroyed stone circle. There are supposedly a couple more stones and some burial cists to be found at the southern end of the avenue, but this appeared to be within the grounds of a private complex.

Midmar Kirk S submitted by TheCaptain on 30th Jul 2017. What a fabulous site, the circle standing in the churchyard of Midmar Kirk, gravestones all around it but none placed within. Nicely looked after, this has become something of a favourite.

Easter Aquhorthies
Date Added: 18th Jul 2022
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: Scotland (Aberdeenshire)
Visited: Yes on 10th Oct 2016. My rating: Condition 5 Ambience 5 Access 4

Easter Aquhorthies submitted by TheCaptain on 31st Jul 2017. The beautiful stone circle, almost complete, is contained within a little circular walled enclosure, a bit like Boscawen-un, which has probably helped the survival of this sublime place.

Log Text: A couple of miles to the west of Inverurie, in some very rural farmland, is the Easter Aquhorthies stone circle. There is a little parking area from which it is a few hundred metres walk aup the lane to the circle. While I was visiting, the local farmer was out with the BT men having his line fixed or adjusted so that he can get a proper broadband connection, if only I could get such a service. The beautiful stone circle, almost complete, is contained within a little circular walled enclosure, a bit like Boscawen-un, which although it has probably helped the survival of this sublime place, makes photography difficult. Unlike many of the others I have seen today, this one is well cared for by the Scottish authorities, and all looking very tidy. Beautiful.

Bourtie Pictish Stone
Date Added: 29th Oct 2019
Site Type: Class I Pictish Symbol Stone
Country: Scotland (Aberdeenshire)
Visited: Yes on 12th Oct 2018
Bourtie Pictish Stone submitted by TheCaptain on 12th Oct 2018. The chapel is easy to find and there is room to park and just a short walk from there through a wooded area. High up on the south side of the Bourtie chapel, near the eastern end, is this pictish stone built into its wall. Symbols are hard to see, but parts of the carvings can be made out.

The Langstane

Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: Scotland (Aberdeenshire)
Visited: Yes on 12th Oct 2018
The Langstane submitted by TheCaptain on 12th Oct 2018. The Long Stone thought to have once been part of a stone circle, now presented in an alcove behind Burger King just off the main Aberdeen thoroughfare of Union Street, at the junction of Dee Street and Langstone Place.
The poor thing seems neglected amongst the bins and street signs, but at least it is still here.

Site Type: Modern Stone Circle etc
Country: Scotland (Aberdeenshire)
Visited: Yes on 11th Feb 2019
Blackhall Stones submitted by TheCaptain on 11th Feb 2019. There are several standing stones and other stone settings positioned at the junctions of the new housing estate roads with the road running west from Inverurie.
I am not sure whether these are real old stones moved and positioned here during the construction of the housing estate.
