Menhir de Kerriou

Trip No.214  Entry No.24  Date Added: 5th Jun 2020

Menhir de Kerriou

Menhir de Kerriou submitted by theCaptain on 24th Jul 2014. Although in the middle of a field of artichokes, the farmer has ploughed out the crop to allow passage to it.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Marked on the ign map to the north east of Plouguiel, along the road to La Roche Jaune, is this menhir in the middle of a field, which I wondered whether this was the newly posted onto the portal menhir, despite it not fitting the description. So, after a pleasant lunch at Treguier, it’s time to have a look and find out. No, this stone is clearly not that recently posted as La Roche Jaune menhir, but something in its own right.

Although in the middle of a field of artichokes, the farmer has ploughed out the crop to allow passage to it. The stone is probably not much more than 5 feet in length, and leaning substantially. It has a hole cut through it near to the top, giving the impression of something a bit more modern, but I do not know. I have no reason to doubt the ign map that it is indeed a menhir.

Menhir de Kerroc'h (Ploemeur)

Menhir de Kerroc'h (Ploemeur) submitted by TheCaptain on 11th Jan 2019. Kerroc’h menhir is a small menhir, only about 1.7 metres tall
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Kerroc’h menhir is a small menhir, only about 1.7 metres tall, that initially looks impossible to get to through the gorse. However, there is a footpath to it from beside the houses, and it comes complete with a little sign.

Menhir de Kervéniou

Log Text: This little menhir, which I estimate to be about 2.5 metres tall, can just be seen in a private garden round the back of a house. It is difficult to get to see, if indeed it is what I saw.

Menhir de l'Ormorice

Menhir de l'Ormorice submitted by theCaptain on 16th Mar 2012. About 800 metres walk from the road, it is easy to see and reach this 3.5 metres tall along a farm track.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Whilst looking for the Bonneval dolmen to the left of the road, I saw this menhir the other side of the field on the right. About 800 metres walk from the road, it is easy to see and reach along a farm track. Its about 3.5 metres tall, and up to 2 metres wide at its base.

Near to the busy TGV express rail line, there's a 10, 12, 20 or 24 coach TGV train whizzing past about one every 2 minutes. This is how railways should be.

Menhir de la Bergerie des Etennevaux

Menhir de la Bergerie des Etennevaux submitted by TheCaptain on 7th May 2005. La Bergerie des Etennevaux, menhir, St Germain-des-Vaux, Manche. Menhir about 2 metres tall right at the northwestern tip of the Cherbourg peninsular, seen from two fields distance in a downpour.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Menhir about 2 metres tall northwest of the village of St Germain-des-Vaux on Cap de la Hague right at the northwestern tip of the Cherbourg peninsular. I couldn’t get right up to this menhir and could only see it from two fields distance and judged the height from the size of the cows in the field with it.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This 4 metre tall menhir fell in 1964, but has been re-erected only with the help of two cranes in the 1980s after they had failed to put it back up manually. It is a nicely shaped stone, and has at its foot another stone, which has several cupules and other markings cut into it. It is well signposted from the village of Avrillé, and is a pleasant evening stroll.

Menhir de la Boutinardière submitted by TheCaptain on 12th Oct 2018. From Michel Baconnais.

Menhir de la Chablère submitted by TheCaptain on 9th May 2005. Les Bellobières menhir, Oisseau, Mayenne. I couldnt be quite sure what there is here, although a menhir is marked on my ign map. Perhaps I completely missed it, maybe there is a ruinous allée couverte here, or perhaps the menhir has had a field clearance cairn made around it.

Menhir de la Cisternette

Menhir de la Cisternette submitted by archeomick on 15th Oct 2007. La Cisternette with Coulet menhir 1 in the background.

Log Text: About 600 metres further down the road from the Levade menhir, and on the slopes to the right of the road, can be seen this menhir. At nearly 2.5 metres tall, it has been christianised by having a cross cut into its face. It’s a nice thin almond shaped stone, but has been concreted into the ground, so I cannot be sure that it is facing in its original orientation.

Menhir de la Courbe

Menhir de la Croix Carrée (Landigou)

Menhir de la Croix Carrée (Landigou) submitted by thecaptain on 22nd Feb 2006. Menhir de la Croix Carrée (Landigou) Looking for a menhir marked on my map, I could find nothing, so asked a lady walking her dog, and she directed me to this roadside cross, a couple of kilometres away. It has a historic monument signpost, which states that it is a megalithic monument of unknown origin.

Log Text: Looking for a menhir marked on my map, I could find nothing, so asked a lady walking her dog, and she directed me to this roadside cross. It has a historic monument signpost, which states that it is a megalithic monument of unknown origin. About 1.2 metres tall, it is of square section, with large crosses carved into each face, joining each other around the corners. Perhaps it was once a menhir, perhaps once an iron age stele. Its hard to tell. But it is not the menhir I was looking for !

Menhir de la Croix Saint Jacques

Log Text: This menhir can be found in a field just to the side of the D.410 road, about 500 metres to the south of the village of Tousson. It stands about 3.3 metres tall, and is a rectangular section lump of sarsen. I found it difficult to park here.

Menhir de la Croix-Grosse

Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir) Country: France (Auvergne:Cantal (15))

Menhir de la Croix-Grosse

Menhir de la Croix-Grosse submitted by thecaptain on 31st Oct 2008. This christianised menhir stands just on the western outskirts of the village of Sériers, and is along the road to Peyrelade (no doubt once home to its own megalith).
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This christianised menhir stands just on the western outskirts of the village of Sériers, and is signposted from there as Menhir Christianisée, and is along the road to Peyrelade (no doubt once home to its own megalith). There is a large basalt carved cross sat on top of a superb column of christalline basalt, octagonal and well over 2 metres high. With its cross, it stands a good 3.5 metres tall. This really is a lovely monument, the basalt column is perfectly upright, and always has been, its never been restored. Apparently the column must have been brought here from several kilometres away, so its obviously at a once very special place.

Menhir de la Crulière

Menhir de la Crulière

Menhir de la Crulière submitted by thecaptain on 20th Dec 2005. This menhir, 2.4 metres tall, is in a well fenced field, near to the village of Brem-sur-Mer in Vendée.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Signposted from the road, 0.5 kilometres walk, and having a little white signpost at the field entrance, I somehow walked right past, and took ages before I turned round and came back. How on earth did I miss it ? I probably wasted almost an hour here ! The menhir, 2.4 metres tall, and a triangular block of white granite, is in a field which is well fenced. The sign tells me that it is the last of four megaliths which existed in the commune of Brem-sur-Mer only a hundred years ago. There is a legend that a fifteen year old boy and his cow were crushed beneath the stone, which was thrown by the devil.

Menhir de la Demoiselle de Bracqueville

Menhir de la Demoiselle de Bracqueville

Menhir de la Demoiselle de Bracqueville submitted by thecaptain on 11th Oct 2006. To visit this stone, find your way from Beny-sur-Mer to the south along small tracks to Bracqueville farm. Park near to the farm, and walk about 500 metres along the track which passes in front of the farm till you get to a junction of trackways. Take the grassy track to the left, and the menhir is a further 500 metres along and just into the field on the left.

Log Text: Found this at last, on probably my third attempt. Find your way from Beny-sur-Mer to the south along small tracks to Bracqueville farm. Park near to the farm, and walk about 500 metres along the track which passes in front of the farm till you get to a junction of trackways. Take the grassy track to the left, and the menhir is a further 500 metres along and just into the field on the left.

Its about 1.4 metres tall, 0.7 metres wide and 0.3 metres thick, and leaning towards the north. The farmer has left very little room around it, and it has some very recent scrapes and damage done to it, no doubt from farm machinery. It is likely that this menhir often gets obscured by crops in the summer. Nice to have found it, its a nice stone. Stupidly I forgot to take my gps with me to get a proper position.

Log Text: Despite being marked on the ign map and having a description of how to find this 1.4 metre tall stone I could find no reasonable place to park down the farm track to Bracqueville before a 500 metre walk so didn’t bother. I could see no sign of the stone from anywhere in the vicinity.
