Ashen Hill Barrows submitted by thecaptain on 25th Aug 2004. Its a photo of mine from several years ago, and I think its probably Ashen Hill, but can't be sure - it could be Priddy Nine Barrows.

Stoney Littleton

Stoney Littleton submitted by TheCaptain on 18th Mar 2005. I called in at Stoney Littleton last weekend, a cracking little barrow. A lovely sunny day, but the walk to the barrow was horrendously muddy. Checked out the pictures here, lots of the entrance and from inside, but there are none which show the whole barrow. So here is one looking at it from the south.

Ston Easton Barrow

Ston Easton Barrow submitted by thecaptain on 20th Nov 2005. Ston Easton Barrow as seen from the A37. I have driven past this barrow hundreds of times and regularly thought I ought to pay it a proper visit. Travelling home from my friends the Shepto Steptoe's the morning after Wells Carnival it was wonderfully sunny, and I had my camera. This is the view from the roadside.

Drove Cottage Henge

Drove Cottage Henge submitted by thecaptain on 11th Sep 2006. A 55 metre diameter henge which can be seen in a field to the south of Hillgrove Road to the north of Wells, and to the east of Priddy. The earthworks can clearly be seen in the field, but without proper access to the field, it was difficult to fully determine what is there.

The view to the southwest from here is fantastic, with the Somerset Levels spread out below.

Madacombe

Madacombe submitted by thecaptain on 27th Sep 2006. Madacombe stone row, Exmoor. Its in there somewhere. Could I find anything ? No chance !!!! I found nothing at all, wading around in waist deep wet grass and heather. If there are any stones to be found here, they are well hidden under the wet moorland growth. I did however, get soaking wet and a twisted ankle for my efforts !

Site Type: Standing Stones Country: England (Somerset)
Visited: Yes on 2nd Nov 2006

Porlock Allotment NE

Porlock Allotment NE submitted by thecaptain on 2nd Nov 2006. About 0.7 kilometres walk to the west of the stone circle, across rough moorland, is marked a cairn and stones. Although it is in quite a prominent position, it was not easy to find amongst all the bracken and heather. The cairn is about 8 metres in diameter, and still perhaps half a metre high.

Visited: Yes on 4th Nov 2006

Porlock Common SW

Porlock Common SW submitted by thecaptain on 4th Nov 2006. Seen here looking east, away from the circle. I found 5 tiny little stones in two parallel rows. There was one row of three stones, spaced about 1.5 metres apart. Adjacent to this is a second row consisting of one stone at the western end, and one more beyond the eastern end, which would seem to be from a fourth pair. The two rows are less than a metre apart. The largest stone is no more than 6 inches in height !

Porlock Circle

Porlock Circle submitted by thecaptain on 10th Nov 2006. Just uphill to the north is another little standing stone, and the remains of a cairn. It looks possible that there was once more stones here. Is this the remains of another little row associated with the circle ? This is the view to the south from the cairn over the circle.

Withypool Hill Barrow

Withypool Hill Barrow submitted by thecaptain on 19th Nov 2006. This is large 25 metre diameter round barrow on the top of Withypool Hill. It’s been much dug about in the middle but is still well over a metre high. The outside circumference is still in very good condition, and almost looks like it had a ditch and outer bank around it originally.

Almsworthy

Almsworthy submitted by thecaptain on 24th Nov 2006. Almsworthy Common. This is stated by various sources to be the remains of two concentric ovals, or up to six lines of stones, but I could see no particular pattern. Here we see about 6 of the little stones poking up above the heather, looking southeast.

Huish Champflower Barrow submitted by thecaptain on 4th Apr 2007. This is a large, but well messed about with barrow surrounded by trees and sheep. There was no obvious way into the field, so I did not go in.
