Holne Ridge 2

Holne Ridge 2 submitted by TheCaptain on 5th Oct 2010. Holne Ridge cairn 2 looking west. I didn’t think I was going to be able to find this as the area it’s in is all covered by fern and bracken, but it was quite obvious once I got near.

Holne Ridge 6 submitted by TheCaptain on 5th Oct 2010. Holne Ridge cairn 6, looking east. This is a nice ring cairn about 12 metres diameter, with a clear ring of stones and rubble surrounding a flat platform within it. There seems to be remnants of a kerb in places.

Holne Ridge 5

Holne Ridge 5 submitted by TheCaptain on 5th Oct 2010. Holne Ridge cairn 5. This is a fairly large and prominent round cairn, about 14 metres diameter and 1.5 metres tall. However, I wasn't going to look too closely, as there were some stroppy looking guard cows staring me down!

Pierre Longue de Saint-Jouan submitted by TheCaptain on 17th Oct 2010. Despite the menhir being so big, it still manages to play a game of hide and seek before finding it along chestnut lined trackways through fields of maize!

Mont-Dol

Mont-Dol submitted by TheCaptain on 23rd Oct 2010. Mont Dol is a large granite rock outcrop, dramatically jutting up through the flat coastal marshlands of the Baie de Mont St-Michel to the north of the ancient city of Dol-de-Bretagne, and in some ways is rather like Mont St-Michel itself, although nowadays completely enclosed within farmed lands.

Holne Moor

Holne Moor submitted by TheCaptain on 21st Nov 2010. At the southeastern end, in a lowpoint before the ground rises again, there seems to be a single, fairly large triangular shaped stone placed across the central or northern row, which may once have been a blocking stone marking the proper end of the monument.

Siward's Cross

Siward's Cross submitted by TheCaptain on 21st Nov 2010. The northern side and western face of this nice old cross, believed to date back to late Saxon, early medieval times. On the western face are the words “Boc Lond” which presumably relate to Buckland, or Book Land, connected to the monks of Buckland Abbey.

Bowda Stone Circle

Bowda Stone Circle submitted by TheCaptain on 4th Dec 2010. I had never heard of a stone circle here until I saw the Pastscape entry here, so thought I’d better go and have a look. Certainly there are a couple of large side set slabs standing on edge here, with others fallen and laying about which could conceivably be remnants of a stone circle.

Site Type: Ring Cairn Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 5th Dec 2010

East Moor ring cairn

East Moor ring cairn submitted by TheCaptain on 5th Dec 2010. The ring cairn centrally on the top of the hill in the middle of East Moor is a splendid example, about 15 metres in diameter. It has a rubble bank about 1 metre wide surrounding a nicely flattened centre. Pictures cannot do this ring cairn any justice. View looking southeast towards Trewortha Tor.

East Moor cairn submitted by TheCaptain on 5th Dec 2010. This is a nice large cairn about 14 or 15 metres in diameter, which has several large slab stones surrounding it, and what seems to be the robbed out remains of a chamber in the centre.

East Moor stone B

East Moor stone B submitted by TheCaptain on 6th Dec 2010. Less than 50 metres to the west of the round cairn can be seen a stone standing proud of the moor, so I went for a look. It is clearly an edge set stone positioned here, 2 feet tall, 3 feet wide and having lost its top.

East Moor stone C submitted by TheCaptain on 6th Dec 2010. About 50 metres to the southeast of the round cairn can be seen a stone standing proud of the moor, so I went for a look. It is clearly an edge set stone positioned here, about 2.5 feet tall and wide, a definite stander similar to the one to the west of the cairn.
