Log Text: I was not expecting this one as I drove past on the way west along the D.2 road. It is a lovely menhir, 3 metres tall, on the edge of a valley. There are some interesting holes in it.
Azinières Dolmen 1
Trip No.203 Entry No.177 Date Added: 19th Apr 2020
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen
Country: France (Midi:Aveyron (12))
Visited: Yes on 27th May 2005. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 2 Access 5

Azinières dolmen 1 submitted by thecaptain on 23rd Mar 2006. This little dolmen sits right beside the busy D.911 road a few kilometres to the north of Millau, continuously passed by masses of heavy lorries which I guess do not like to pay the toll charges for the new motorway.
There was once another one near here, destroyed when the road was made bigger.

Pèira Levada (La Glène) submitted by thecaptain on 22nd Mar 2006. High up on the windswept, sunbaked plateau, not far from the D.911 road north of Millau, this is one heck of a big dolmen which has sadly collapsed on one side.

Log Text: High up on the windswept, sunbaked plateau, not far from the D.911 road north of Millau, this is one heck of a big dolmen which has sadly collapsed on one side. The views to the southeast over the river Tarn are astonishing, with the new motorway snaking its way down the distant hillside adding some interest.
The giant capstone must be 6 metres by 4 metres, and was sitting on two 4 metre long by 2 metre high side slabs, the eastern of which has tipped inwards letting the capstone fall this side. Its backstone has broken, allowing this to happen. The chamber faces unusually south of southeast at 154° - most of the dolmens round here are pretty close to due east. The back has at some point been walled up for use as a shelter.
Its a pity about the dirty modern buildings and busy road nearby.

Dolmen du Devès des Gleyettes 1 submitted by thecaptain on 5th Jul 2005. Another nice dolmen, just a few hundred metres further round the signposted woodland walk north of Martiel.

Log Text: A few more hundred metres round the signposted footpath is this dolmen with no name sign. Still in much of its long mound, the capstone is broken into three pieces, and partly fallen. The chamber is 3.5 metres long by 1.5 metres wide, and faces southeast at 125°.

Dolmen de Perignagols submitted by TheCaptain on 4th Apr 2011. This dolmen has a lovely pitted egg shaped capstone, about 4 metres by 4 metres sitting on the top of two three to four metre long side slabs.

Log Text: This is a nice dolmen with a lovely shaped and pitted egg shaped capstone, about 4 metres by 4 metres sitting on the top of two three to four metre long side slabs. The chamber is a healthy 4 metres by 2 metres internal dimensions.
The dolmen is signposted up a track to the top of a little hill just to the north of Rodez airport runway, but the atmosphere here is spoiled a bit by all the road straightening and widening going on nearby. There are fantastic views from here across towards Rodez.
Dolmen de Jasse Rouge
Trip No.203 Entry No.154 Date Added: 16th Apr 2020
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen
Country: France (Midi:Aveyron (12))
Visited: Yes on 26th May 2005. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 3 Access 3
Dolmen de Jasse Rouge submitted by TheCaptain on 9th Apr 2011. Amongst the undergrowth are several mounds of stones here, one of which has the remains of a chamber visible in one of its sides.
The mound has been much messed about by farming, and field clearance, and it is difficult to tell what is original. The remains of the chamber are open, and not at all cared for.

Tumulus de Montaubert submitted by TheCaptain on 10th Apr 2011. Above Salles-la-Source, to the northeast, are roadsigns to the supposedly nicely restored Peyrelebade dolmens, which I did not find.
All I could find for sure while walking north in the scorching heat along the track towards Cadeyrac, was a fenced off small mound in a field to the west of the track.

At the first junction, there is a dolmen sign in both directions, to the left takes you on a long walk to the dolmens de Cans. After a kilometre or so, you reach the dolmen de Cans 2, in a field to the right. Still in an oval tumulus, a 4 metre rounded capstone sits on top of a 4 metre long, by 1.5 metre wide chamber, which opens to the east facing 077°.

Dolmen de Surguières 4 submitted by theCaptain on 13th Sep 2012. Inspired by the recent humorous signpost picture, here is one I had to photograph during my travels back in 2005.
Just east of the hamlet of Surguières there is a track to the south, signposted to dolmens. At the first junction, there is a dolmen sign in both directions, to the right leads to the Surguières or Cans group of dolmens. To the left leads to the Saplous group of dolmens.
A win win junction if ever there was one, and delightful signs!

Log Text: Just to the south of the road which leads east to the hamlet of Surguières, about 800 metres west of the village, this dolmen can be seen by its mound. The capstone has slipped off to the side, and it is all a bit of a jumble, although the large side slabs are easily recogniseable.

Log Text: This one is a fair old hike from the village of Surguières, where there is a track to the south, signposted to dolmens. At the first junction, the track to the left takes you on a long walk past the dolmens de Cans, and going further, and then to the right across a couple of fields (signposted) you eventually come to the remains of this, in the corner of a field under some trees.
It is fairly wrecked and heavily overgrown, but worth a look, as it is a double chambered tomb. There are two 4 metre long, by 1.8 metre wide, slab lined deep chambers in line with each other. but there are no capstones to be found.

At the first junction, there is a dolmen sign in both directions, to the right is supposed to lead to the Surguières 4 dolmen. I looked for this first, and again later, but could not find anything. Log Text: Marked on the ign 1:100000 map with a pink square and right beside a good road with brand new roadsigns pointing to dolmens, I thought I couldn’t miss these dolmens. Again i walked for miles in all directions, but could I find anything ? Nothing. I am starting to get fed up with this.
