Log Text: I am not really sure what to make of this, the remains of which are on sloping ground on the northeastern flank of Down Ridge above Hexworthy, just above the enclosed areas below. There is not a huge amount left, and much of that is at the uphill side, large slabs set on their long sides, several of which are adjacent to each other sort of making a solid wall. There are also a couple of standing stones forming part of the same arc, indicating a diameter of about 25 metres. On the lower side of the circle are several fallen slabs, which seem to have been moved about and not in their original positions. It's all a bit sad really, I would like to have seen this in better condition. The views over to the north and east over the river Dart are fabulous.
Doulting Quarries barrow
Date Added: 20th Mar 2023
Site Type: Modern Stone Circle etc
Country: England (Somerset)
Visited: Yes on 19th Mar 2023. My rating: Access 5

Doulting Quarries barrow submitted by TheCaptain on 20th Mar 2023. In some open land behind the bus stop at Doulting, opposite to the stone quarries entrance, I saw what looked like a longbarrow with stone entrance. Closer inspection showed this to be a modern interpretation, with a large stone standing on the top.

Domaine de Castillon submitted by theCaptain on 30th Dec 2013. View across the swollen river to the northern end of the hill where the C17th Chateau has been built on top of the ancient site.
It was such horrible wet weather, I wasn't going to explore away from the road.

Log Text: Stopped off for a quick look while travelling home after Christmas at my sisters. The weather was foul and everything completely sodden, so didn't spend any time exploring other than driving around the local roads. One to come back to sometime, for a better look for some of the ramparts, and a look round the chateau gardens.

Log Text: This is a site which until a few days before I visited would have been completely overgrown, but thankfully has had all the gorse, blackthorn etc cut back and cleared.
What you get is a round mound, about 20 to 25 metres in diameter, with the very ruinous remains of three chambers with entry corridors. The central was probably the largest, but this is not much more than a depression in the mound. The northern still has its capstone and a recogniseable passageway, while the southern has an entry passage with one capstone still in place, but only half of a recognisable chamber.

Log Text: Walking to the west along the coast path from the big carpark near the beach at Penlann headland, and you get to the remains of this large cairn after about 500 metres. It is difficult to make anything out nowadays, other than there are lots of large rocks on the remains of a large mound, overlooking the Villaine estuary. Closer inspection shows this to have once been a large 30 metre diameter cairn, with at least three passage tombs within it, two of which still have a few capstones in position.

Country: France (Aquitaine:Gironde (33))
Visited: Saw from a distance on 3rd Jun 2005

Dolmens de Bignon submitted by thecaptain on 9th Jan 2006. Supposedly there is one large allée-couverte and two simple dolmens to be found, and I must have spent over an hour looking along all tracks and in all fields here.
The best I found is this pile of stones in the middle of a field - could it be one of the small dolmens under there ?
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: I knew things were going too well this morning. I found Frontenac, and from there I eventually found Bignon, but after much searching and some very difficult to understand directions from an old lady living near the farm (they are very big, and only 800 metres away) I could find no signs of the three dolmens here. Supposedly there is one large allée-couverte and two simple dolmens to be found, and I must have spent over an hour looking along all tracks and in all fields. Perhaps they are deep in some woods beside the stream.

Log Text: Supposedly very close to the D.19 is this 5 metre long stone the remains of a dolmen capstone but I couldn’t find it. Have to say that by now I wasn’t looking hard. It said that if you recite an Avé Maria to it the stone will turn nine times.
I really must try and find this one tomorrow. Its been one of those afternoons where I couldn’t find anything and became frustrated. Then it started to rain and then thunderstorms and I find I am driving around fairly aimlessly so decide to stop and find a camp site for the night which as seems to be the case at times like this isn’t easy. I find several closed ones until I find an open one back at Beaumont again but it only accepts tents.
Its got a tiny car park and someone has parked awkwardly behind me and I have to reverse out from a tight spot uphill between the cars. This I do successfully but believing I was out crunch and I have hit the gatepost on the other side and have buggered the new plastic trim at the back corner. It seems to be the only damage. Poor van.
I eventually find a campsite at Couze but with nobody around so I just take a place and plug in for the night. At least the showers work. Wonder who won the F.A. Cup this afternoon ?

Log Text: This is a nice site, up on top of a mound surrounded by forest, although it was difficult to make out what exactly remains here. It seems to be a T shaped arrangement, perhaps an east west oriented chamber with an additional northern part ? I must try to look it up somewhere. Basically, what remains are lots of stones on top of a big mound, with one or two capstones still in place.

Dolmen du Peyre-Dusets submitted by thecaptain on 27th Jan 2006. To the northwest of the village of Poueyferré, take the road up into the hills towards the Dechetterie and park as near as possible to the Chemin Henry IV trackway which runs along the top of the ridge here. Take this ancient trackway northwards, and walk for about a kilometer, where the Peyre-Dusets dolmen can be found.

Take this ancient trackway northwards, and walk for about a kilometer, where the Peyre-Dusets dolmen can be found. It is signposted.
The dolmen is right beside the track and has a 2 metres by 1 metre chamber covered by a partially fallen capstone which is fairly round and about 2.5 metres in diameter. The dolmen faces towards the southeast and probably has fantastic views towards the mountains, but unfortunately no view at all today while I am here. There is a semblance of the remains of a mound at the back and to the west of the dolmen.
There are lots of deer in and out of the maize in the fields around here, and chestnuts falling onto me from the trees surrounding the lane, which is nice.

Log Text: After passing various other inconclusive mounds I came across the third proper dolmen I found up here near to some woods and in the nice cool shade at the junction of a couple of track. This is what I call a proper dolmen with most of its mound disappeared for use in the nearby wall no doubt and so it is standing proud on the hillside. The chamber is about 3 metres long by 1.8 m wide and is oriented at about 130°. The capstone sits nicely on top at the usual jaunty angle due to a broken side slab on the south side.
