London Stone
Date Added: 29th Oct 2019
Site Type: Marker Stone
Country: England (Greater London)
Visited: Yes on 24th Nov 2013

London Stone submitted by theCaptain on 24th Nov 2013. I struggled to find The London Stone at first, not helped by looking for it at No 110, instead of No 111, and asked several people of its whereabouts, but nobody knew... Then by looking where I was expecting to find it, and walking the street a couple of times, my Dad said "whats this, is this it?"
Have to say its not quite what I was expecting, and is very disappointing, and not only just about impossile to see from outside, covered off from inside now.
Still, its still there, and I...

Horton Camp
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Gloucestershire)
Visited: Yes on 29th Mar 2004

Horton Camp submitted by TheCaptain on 29th Mar 2004. Horton Camp Hillfort, South Gloucestershire, ST765845, March 2004.
View looking northwest along the remaining bank across the top of the hill. There is no sign of a ditch. The "inside" of the camp is to the left.
I may well be wrong, but I think that this bank may be a former internal division of what was once a much bigger camp taking in the entire promontary, not just the southern end.

Starveall submitted by TheCaptain on 29th Mar 2004. Starveall Barrow, South Gloucestershire, ST794879, March 2004.
View looking west at the barrows east side.
The ploughed field surrounding the barrow is eating away at it. The most recent ploughing must have taken a couple of feet from each end, with all the stones which formerly made up the mound being scattered across the field.

Log Text: I visited this barrow this afternoon. Its getting in a very poor state. The ploughed field surrounding it is eating away at the mound. The most recent ploughing must have taken a couple of feet from each end, with all the stones which formerly made up the mound being scattered across the field. And there is the remains of a massive dead tree which has died and pulled down lots more stone along one edge. I saw no sign of any chamber, but it was all covered with vegetation and rubble thrown onto it.

The Grickstone submitted by TheCaptain on 13th Apr 2004. Nice standing stone to the south of Grickstone farm, beside a footpath at the corner of a small wood. The stone has about 6 foot in length above ground, but due to the angle at which it leans, is only about 4 feet high. Nicely decorated with lichens. South Gloucestershire, ST777828.

The Beeracres Stone

Site Type: Modern Stone Circle etc
Country: England (Gloucestershire)
Visited: Yes on 11th Nov 2004

The Beeracres Stone submitted by thecaptain on 11th Nov 2004. The Beeracres Stone
My new standing stone, almost 6 feet of best Cornish Granite, recently erected in the garden of Beeracres.
Despite a nightmare start to things when getting it delivered, we managed to move it into place and erect it last Sunday afternoon fairly easily, and had a nice little celebratory event.
I think it looks nicely at home here.

Log Text: Massive long barrow to the east of the village of Leighterton, which can be seen walled in across a couple of fields. I could find no public access. The remains of this barrow are massive, and as is often the case, covered with trees. It looks to be one worthy of further exploration if possible.

Blackquarries Hill submitted by thecaptain on 17th Nov 2004. Blackquarries Hill Long Barrow, seen here in front of the wood in the November evening sunlight. Picture taken from the Cotswold Way to the northwest.

Log Text: The remains of this long barrow can be seen in a field at the southern end of the ridge between Tyley Bottom and Ozleworth Bottom near Wotton-under-Edge. There is a track which is part of the Cotswold Way which runs round the hill and passes close to the barrow, but I could find no way in for a closer look, although the field was empty and being used by some people flying model aircraft. The barrow remains have been fenced off, and are becoming grown over. I could see a shadowy shape sticking out of the mound, which was probably an old tree stump, but just could have been a bit of old stone.

Ganborough submitted by thecaptain on 4th Jan 2007. This was obviously once a large and substantial longbarrow sited on a hilltop ridge. But these days it is very easily missed as you drive past on the busy A424 which cuts through its southeastern end.
Viewed here looking north.
