Pendeen Vau Fogou, Manor Farm, Pendeen, West Penwith, Cornwall (SW381356) An Iron Age fogou situated on a working farm (a great place to stay either in the 17th century converted manor house holiday cottage or the B&B). This view is the fogou across the farmyard showing the external structure.

Carcassonne - La Cité

Carcassonne - La Cité submitted by thecaptain on 19th Feb 2005. La Cité de Carcassonne, seen here from the south. Ancient citadel which goes back as far as time. Although the main remains of this fantastic fairy story city are now mediaeval much of the walls can be seen to date back to Visigoth and Roman times. This is of course, all built upon a citadel which was here long before any of them came here.

Abri de Cro-Magnon submitted by thecaptain on 2nd Sep 2006. Abri de Cro-Magnon UNESCO World Heritage site. It's nothing much to see, just a little rock shelter in the cliff face shaded by a couple of large chestnut trees, with a little walled and fenced area around it. It is sadly hidden round the back of the hotel and almost forgotten.

The entrance is on the right on the photo (the cave on the left is a dead end and presents no drawing) Inside the cave, a great number of buffalos and horses drawings and some engraved drawings. Magdalenian period (about 20.000 BCE) One of the rare prehistoric cave with drawings still open to public.

I spent the day walking round the entire coast of St Mary's visiting many ancient sites, before catching a ferry over to Bryher in the evening and getting picked up by the crew.

Nornour

Nornour submitted by Thorgrim on 4th Nov 2003. The island of Nornour (SV 944147) is less than four acres in size and is joined to Great Ganilly at low tide. Yet the excavations of the early '70's revealed the remains of a major settlement which was occupied from the middle of the Bronze Age to the Romano-British Iron Age. Nornour clearly reveals the effects of rising sea levels, as this tiny scrap of land could never have supported such a thriving community. Many more houses are doubtless lost beneath the sea and right up until Tudor ...

This grave gets trodden on a lot, as it is not normally covered in scrub like the other two. There are more stones to be seen here, but they are rather a jumble.
