White Moor Down submitted by TheCaptain on 12th Jun 2004. White Moor Down Stone Circle, Dartmoor, Devon SX634896

There are 18 remaining stones of a probable nineteen arranged fairly evenly, in a circle of diameter 20 metres. The stones are arranged flat side inwards, and vary in height between 2 and 4 feet high. 150 metres southeast of the circle is the Whit Moor Stone, which is more than 5 feet in height, and has been adapted as a parish boundary stone, with its parish marks cut into it. This stone is almost certainly much older than just a boundary stone, and is likely to be associated in some way with the circle. Between this stone and the circle are the remains of a cairn.

Sourton Tors Stone Circle submitted by TheCaptain on 7th Jun 2004. Sourton Tors Stone Circle, Dartmoor, Devon SX546896
This is the view looking towards Corn Ridge of the remains of this stone circle on the saddle between the slopes of Sourton Tors and Corn Ridge.
The giveaway to finding this circle is that it lies just to the southeast of the remains of half an applecrusher which has been carved from a block of granite, but been left up on the moors.
The centre of the circle is just to the left of centre in this picture on the flat ground, and about 12...

Cornridge SE submitted by TheCaptain on 7th Jun 2004. Corn Ridge cairn, Dartmoor, Devon SX551891
The remains of a nice large cairn can be found at the summit of Corn Ridge, about 10m diameter. There is the usual depression in its middle, but otherwise it seems fairly intact, with some quite nice stones forming its outside shape. There is also what seems to be the remains of a circle of stones surrounding it with about 2 metres extra diameter.

This is a view looking downhill from the cairn. As usual, the larger stones are near the cairn, and they generally get smaller the further away from the cairn they are, with a few notable exceptions. Each of the rows has a large slab placed across the rows at its end by the cairn.

Cosdon Hill Cairn Circle submitted by TheCaptain on 10th Jun 2004. Cosdon Hill Cairn Circle, Dartmoor, Devon SX643916
On a flatter shelf of land on the eastern side of Cosdon Hill are the splendid remains of a cairn and treble stone row.
The remains of the cairn at the uphill end of the rows is approx 8 metres in diameter, and has been substantially messed about with. Despite this, there are the clear remains of a double cist in the centre of the cairn, the downhill one of which still has its capstone largely in place. Several stones also remain in place...

The southern cairn is slightly smaller, with a remaining circle of only small stones. The southern row leads downhill from here for about 60 metres.
This is a view of the southern cairn and the top of the stone row looking towards Hart Tor.

The cairn at the top of the northern rows is about 9m in diameter, and is surrounded by a lovely ring of 15 stone slabs. It is possible that there is another ring of stones still present within the cairn.
This is the view to the northwest towards Black Tor.

The northern of the Hart Tor rows is a double row avenue which has its lower end at the river Meavy and progresses up the hillside in an easterly direction to a nice cairn at the upper end, 125 metres distant.
This is a view looking up at the two cairns from near the upper end of the avenue.

Sharpitor W submitted by thecaptain on 18th Jun 2004. Sharpitor West Stone Row, Dartmoor, Devon SX551707
On the western slopes of Sharpitor are the remains of a nice stone row. The row starts near a cairn at the uphill end, and proceeds for 130 metres southwest down the slope to a large terminal stone, about 4 feet high. Just before this lower terminal stone, a spring and its small stream has broken through the row, and taken out some of the stones.
This is a view of the bottom end.

Situated on the flattish saddle of land between Sharpitor and Leedon Tor can be found the remains of a much ruined double stone row and cairn at the upper, western, end of the row.
View here of the cairn looking down the row. Not a great deal to see with the grass and ferns growing, is there !

Log Text: The remains of Corringdon Ball chambered tomb are marked on the map as Long Barrow, and it is situated on the saddle of land between Corringdon Ball and Brent Fore Hill, not far from the cairn at the head of the Brent Fore row. This was once one of the largest monuments on the moor, but has been badly damaged, with a track cut through its northern part, and most of the southern end destroyed. Several large stones remain at the south end, which would once have formed a very large chamber. These are now nearly all fallen and broken, with just a semblance of any chamber recognisable.
