Log Text: Walking up Green Street to the ridgeway, there are good view of the plentiful barrows dotted about on the hillsides. I am passed several times by a chap who is walking quicker than me, but stops for lots of photos.

Log Text: North up the Ridgeway past more barrows. The chap in the black fleece with all sorts of badges etc has also turned this way. I get the feeling he is off to the Polisher!

The Polisher (Fyfield Down)

The Polisher (Fyfield Down) submitted by TheCaptain on 24th Sep 2019. At long last, I have been to visit this fabulous stone.

Log Text: Yes indeed, the chap in the black fleece has gone to the polisher, and is taking all sorts of photos. I sit and wait halfway down the hill, but may still be in some of his pictures. He moves on downhill, and I see him busily taking lots of pictures of some of the stones. I take my chance and go have a good look at the polisher. Fabulous. After my 5 minutes here I walk back up to the Ridgeway and stop for a sit down and to collect my thoughts etc. noticing that the bloke in the black fleece has moved back up to the Polisher. He must have moved away to let me have my visit. As I walk on south I notice he is following behind me, but heads back towards Avebury, so was obviously only on a mission to the Polisher.

Log Text: Good views of the barrows on Avebury Down from the Ridgeway, but I don’t take any photos. Get my hand scratched and stung as I try to get some decent blackberries, because the wind is blowing so strongly.

Overton Hill barrow cemetery

Overton Hill barrow cemetery submitted by Humbucker on 26th Dec 2017. Overton Hill Barrow Cemetery. A fantastically atmospheric place to visit, especially during the winter months when most other visitors tend to stick to Avebury or The Ridgeway itself.

Log Text: Over the A4 to the Sanctuary, perhaps I can sit and have lunch here, but the circle of concrete breezeblocks has a couple of alternative types sat in the centre and dinging little bells. Couple of photos and move on.

East Kennett longbarrow submitted by Humbucker on 21st Nov 2017. East Kennet Longbarrow. Without the leaves on the trees you can appreciate just how big this longbarrow is!

Log Text: I should have gone a bit further up the road from East Kennet to get a view of the long barrow on the hillside. However, good views over to East Kennet longbarrow from the hills near West Kennet barrow.

Silbaby submitted by marcgreenman on 21st Sep 2020. Approaching waden hill, tree and nettle coverage can be clearly seen from here this also gives an approximate idea of the mound's size
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Walking along the fields beside the stream, get clear views of Silbaby mound, recently declared to be not prehistoric but medieval, and officially named The Waden Mound. There is a dead tree in front of it with a large hollow near the top which makes it look like an owl from a distance.

West Kennett Long Barrow

West Kennett Long Barrow submitted by jackdaw1 on 16th Oct 2007. A shot taken inside West kennet long barrow nr. Avebury on 25 sec exposure at f16-conjuring spooky feels. A small child called jake was happily playing and respectfully enjoying the atmosphere in there.

Log Text: Up the hill across the fields to West Kennet longbarrow. Its bright and clear but very windy up here, which gives good views all around. A steady stream of people are coming up here for a look, but not enough to get in the way. As I suspect is often the case, there is quite a bit of tat and suchlike inside, put there by people who should know better.

Log Text: Good views of Silbury today, so I decide to walk to it along the path in the fields north of the busy A4 road. It looks lovely in this light, sometimes in the sunshine and sometimes in the shade. With the bright green grass of the fields blowing around in the wind, it looks to be floating in a sea of green. Beautiful, and strangely compelling. From here I walk towards Avebury along the stream, but see people walking over Waden Hill, so decide to go over that and down to the Avenue, so as to approach Avebury along the West Kennet Avenue. There are fabulous views of Silbury Hill in its plain from up here, probably the best views of it there are to be had.

West Kennet Avenue submitted by Humbucker on 12th Jan 2019. West Kennet Avenue in the summer. Looking south towards West Kennet.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Down to the bottom of Waden Hill and now head up the West Kennet Avenue towards Avebury. Its stones are positively glowing in the afternoon sunshine. This is obviously the way to approach Avebury, and even a herd of bullocks in the enclosure couldn't deter me from walking all the way up, although I did divert to the top of the area to avoid most of them, which meant not seeing the stone with the polishing grooves again. At the top of the Avenue, cross the road and enter the enormous henge through the entrance portal with the beautiful trees and enormous Barber Stone, which I make sure I get a sit down on. The stones of the inner circle are glowing in the bright sunshine, as I decide to go for a pint in the Red Lion.

Log Text: Day to Dartmoor for a lovely and sunny but tiring walk from Dunnabridge. Decided to start my walk by searching out the various cairns and cists on the way up to Bellever Tor, for which the ViewRanger with OSMap app helped enormously for those marked on the map. First I found, marked as "Cairn & Cist" was a small cist with a couple of surrounding kerbstones in some open rough ground which had probably been burned fairly recently.

Log Text: Second cain I looked for first had the challenge of getting across the wall into the eastern area. I found the cairn in what I thought was a most unlikely place on a slope, the remains being largely a single cist sideslab, with a few other stones laying nearby.

Log Text: Back into the western area to search for this marked as "Cairn Circle & Cist", hiding in amongst the long grass, which was at times almost waist deep. Nice remains of a cist with several cairn kerbstones encirling it.

Log Text: A long and difficult walk through long grass on very uneven ground to try and find this marked on the map as "Cist", which I only found using the gps. I found a single standing stone which I thought must be it, but then while taking photos I almost fell into the cist nearby!

Bellever Tor 2

Bellever Tor 2 submitted by AngieLake on 25th Nov 2009. This is a possible candidate for the 'circle' at SW of Bellever Tor. It's hard to tell, but this looked as if it was placed upright deliberately, and probably part of a cairn circle or hut circle. 10 Sept 09.

Log Text: Making it over the northern wall into the area where the forest has recently been cleared, and look for the next "Cairn" marked on my map. Even with gps I struggle to find what could be considered to be a cairn, although there were several contenders. I suspect that what I found as a single standing stone was its last remains.

Bellever Tor Cairn one submitted by caradoc68 on 6th Oct 2013. This incredible Circle Kist is just on the edge of Bellever plantation facing Bellever Tor, mentioned by both Worth and Butler has being a Kist with three sides and a capstone.

Log Text: Now on a worn pathway along what was previously the edge of the forested area, and I get to what is marked "Cairn & Cist". A nicely formed cairn is found with a few surrounding kerbstones and a large capstone covering the remnants of a cist underneath.

Log Text: Following lunch atop the splendid viewpoint that is Bellever Tor, I walked northwards towards Lakehead Hill along the nice and clear pathway which passes through several ancient settlements, of which various walls and other remains can be seen.
