Log Text: After a pint at the Kings arms I decide I have enough time to have a look for many of the Shap stones. First off is the Giant's Foot, which is just across a field behind the house at the back of the pub. It’s a large flat stone.

The Fiddler

The Fiddler submitted by theCaptain on 3rd Jan 2013. Nowadays not much more than a large lump of stone laying in a field to the east of the A39 on the highpoint of land as the road passes over St Breock downs. It is positioned at a point where the line of the 9 Maidens would cross the top of the ridge.

It is lovely light up here this afternoon, but the stone is across a fence from where I can walk to up the farm track, and the field full of livestock. It doesn't look that exciting, so I'll satisfy myself with taking pictures from the edge of the field. There is so much other large stone all around up here, that it is impossible to really tell what would be megalithic and what is field clearance.

The Cockpit

The Cockpit submitted by LivingRocks on 18th Mar 2005. A panoramic view of the Cockpit Stone Circle which according to Magicmap ‘includes a circular kerbed stone bank 2.8m -11.2m wide and up to 0.5m high which encloses an area approximately 27m in diameter. There are 27 (?) standing and recumbent stones set largely into the internal face of this bank, thereby creating the stone circle. The tallest standing stone measures about 0.95m high and some of the recumbent stones are up to 1.9m in length. Within the eastern side of the stone circle, abuttin...

Log Text: I have been meaning to visit The Cockpit for many many years, and I managed to do so in September 2022. From White Raise I head off towards the Cockpit, down to the major crossing of tracks, and then taking the way to the west, on what is now a largely rebuilt and upraised stone trackway across the boggy moorland. This has made what was probably difficult going into a very easy and pleasant walk. Just after a little ford over a stream, and there it is, looking all green inside and splendid. Its a large circular area of flat ground surrounded by a stone lined embankment, with a good set of quite large stones around the inner edge, another not so complete ring around the outside. There are a few little round cairn like structures spaced around its circumference, the largest being at the eastern side. Time for lunch, then I'd better head back. Having looked at the rough and marshy ground to the south, I decide to go back the way I came, and not to make up a loop walk across the open moorland to look for a few other cairns and "piles of stones" marked on the OS map.

The Beeracres Stone submitted by thecaptain on 11th Nov 2004. The Beeracres Stone My new standing stone, almost 6 feet of best Cornish Granite, recently erected in the garden of Beeracres. Despite a nightmare start to things when getting it delivered, we managed to move it into place and erect it last Sunday afternoon fairly easily, and had a nice little celebratory event. I think it looks nicely at home here.

Terramara di Montale submitted by thecaptain on 20th Sep 2008. In a little park area outside the church, faint remains of the ancient ditch and embankment can be seen, and there is an enclosed area where excavations were carried out in the 1990s, and many of the finds are displayed in here. However, it has a glass front, and so something of what is inside can be seen at all times.

Log Text: A day to myself, and decide to go to Totnes, but first go the scenic way through Buckland, then decide to walk out to Buckland Beacon for a look at the Ten Commandments stones. The views from here are fantastic, right down to the sea all around the south, including right along the Teign estuary. Great to spend time looking all around the north and west trying to figure out all the various tors and bits of Dartmoor previously visited. Magnificent. There is a very interesting series of Boundary stones to the north, one of which looked to me like an old cross originally.

Log Text: Before heading up to White Moor, I look for the kerbed cairn Paul has made a sitepage for, over by the marked Boundary Stone. I firstly find the boundary stone, standing proud of the long grass, and it seems to have been mounted on a large stony area. I read later that this has been declared as one of several cairns located in this area, and it makes sense to me.

Tautavel Musee de Prehistoire

Tautavel Musee de Prehistoire submitted by thecaptain on 16th Dec 2005. Museum in the village of Tautavel in the French departement of Pyrénées-Orientales, which is the home to one of the oldest known European Humans.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I only came here to get a photo, assuming the museum would be closed on a Monday, but it was open, so thought I'd better go in. The museum contains hundreds of thousands of items found at the nearby Caune de l'Arago cave, where the remains of a human skull was found in July 1971, the skull being known as Arago item 21. Since then many others have been found, along with items of their food, tools etc etc. The finds have been dated to about 450,000 BC, and thus are amongst the earliest remains of humans found in Europe.

Tautavel man lead a life of hunting, and this is all displayed here also, with remains of many animals and suchlike which would have been around at that time. Tautavel man, however, is not an ancester of ours, as he lead up to Neanderthal man, which died out 30,000 years ago, to be replaced by Cro Magnon man.

While this should all have been very interesting, I have to admit to finding many of the displays quite dull and repetitive, and the awful American voice talking down to me in the audio guide was enough to put me right off. The whole museum seemed a bit 1970's and showing signs of age. The displays mostly consisted of bones and tools in glass cases, video presentations of certain things, and staged scenes using mannequins, with lots of keep off and don't touch signs. In my recent travels, I have seen many much better presented museums which bring the subject to life.
