Chapman Barrows Quincunx

Chapman Barrows Quincunx submitted by thecaptain on 16th Mar 2008. Looking up the slope from the bottom stone. The broken central stone is in a depression beside the marsh grass below my bag - which marks the position of the upper stone.

Chapman Down Barrow

Chapman Down Barrow submitted by thecaptain on 18th Mar 2008. This large round barrow on the southeastern slopes of Chapman Down has a large slice cut through to the middle, rather than the usual hole in the top. View here to the southeast, with the steep valley down towards Challacombe seen, where the Longstone stands at the top of. It can be seen on a better res version of the picture, about 2/3 from the left below the skyline.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This menhir is about 3 metres tall and can be found a couple of miles south of the village of Saint-Siméon from where it is signposted though its not on my ign map. It is a lovely smoothed menhir standing at the edge of a little copse across a field from the small lane.

Château Bû

Château Bû

Château Bû submitted by thecaptain on 22nd Nov 2005. Château Bû, part of the St Just megalithic wonderworld. A chambered tumulus with a stone circle on the top and also 3 or 4 large white menhirs. Most strange. Like nothing I have seen before at all. Sort of like three or four monuments in one all on top of each other.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This is now fenced off to prevent the massive erosion which was happening but clearly visible although becoming a little overgrown. Just what the heck is it ? A chambered tumulus with entrance to the east but with a stone circle on the top and also 3 or more large white menhirs. Most strange. Like nothing I have seen before at all. Sort of like three or four monuments in one all on top of each other.

Château-Larcher Dolmen

Trip No.204  Entry No.154  Date Added: 17th Aug 2020
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: France (Poitou:Vienne (86))
Visited: Saw from a distance on 20th Jul 2005

Log Text: While trying to find a campsite at Chateau Larcher, I saw lots of signposts to Dolmen. I tried to follow them, they pointed out of the town and then I could find no more. So this was another two dolmens not found on this very frustrating day. However, right outside the chateau, there is a big cross mounted on top of a sort of dolmen. I wonder if it is real. By the time I saw it, I had driven past, and there was nowhere to stop. Maybe thats another one I should have had.

Cheriton Ridge 2

Cheriton Ridge 2 submitted by TheCaptain on 23rd Feb 2011. To the east, I found plenty more broken and fallen stones, which if all in place would have meant that this setting was perhaps three rows of four stones, running laterally to what is the remaining sixpack.

Cheriton Ridge Boundary stones

Site Type: Modern Stone Circle etc Country: England (Somerset)
Visited: Yes on 1st Apr 2011

Cheriton Ridge Boundary stones

Cheriton Ridge Boundary stones submitted by TheCaptain on 1st Apr 2011. These two lovely old standing stones are each about 5 feet tall, and look very gnarled. However, they are not prehistoric, although many hundreds of years old. If you are out on this part of Exmoor, do go and have a look at them - they are far more impressive and beautiful than any of the remaining prehistoric stone setting stones to be found in the vicinity!

Cheriton Ridge ring cairn

Visited: Yes on 28th Mar 2011

Cheriton Ridge ring cairn

Cheriton Ridge ring cairn submitted by TheCaptain on 28th Mar 2011. Approaching from the north, what looks like a stone (which I first assumed must be a sheep) can clearly be seen down by the saddle of the ridge, with some darker heather around it. As approaching nearer to this, and it can be seen that it is indeed a stone, with a few other smaller stones standing nearby.

Cheriton Ridge stone row

Date Added: 29th Oct 2019
Site Type: Stone Row / Alignment Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 20th Feb 2011

Cheriton Ridge stone row

Cheriton Ridge stone row submitted by TheCaptain on 20th Feb 2011. I found the tops of about 5 or 6 stones just poking their tops above the turf, aligned in a row oriented just east of north along the ridge. As with most of the Exmoor stone rows, the stones are tiny and very difficult to find, with most of them probably buried under the turf and heather.

Site Type: Long Barrow Country: England (Kent)
Visited: Yes on 30th Aug 2004

Chestnuts

Chestnuts submitted by thecaptain on 30th Aug 2004. To see the remains of this chambered long barrow, which lies in private ground, a visit needs to be arranged in advance with the owners, which I hadnt done, as I hadn't planned in advance to be here. However, the top of the stones can be seen over the field from the road through Addington Barrow.

Site Type: Standing Stones Country: France (Pays de la Loire:Loire-Atlantique)
Visited: Yes on 8th Jun 2005. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 5

Chevanou Menhir

Chevanou Menhir submitted by AlexHunger on 2nd Jun 2005. Two Menhirs, one broad upright 3.5 Meter tall, the other 2.5 Meter long fallen one with with cup marks, in centre of Pauvredie Hamlet 3 KM South East of Town. 30 meters away, there are 3 more broken stones near utility pole.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Still further north up the D.5 road from Chauvé, is he Chevanou menhir, right by the roadside. This one is quite famous for its bottle shape, but this is only apparent in one view, from edge on. The stone is over 4 metres high and 3 metres wide, and from this view it is more sharks fin shaped than bottle shaped in profile. Just beside it is another large stone. A fallen menhir companion maybe ? Its hard to say for sure.
